Major Scores Initial Success of Meeting. » COLUMBUS, Ohio; April 23.— In a driving finish P. Dolans Medina earned a head decision over Bonfire in the sixth and feature race at Beulah Park this afternoon in a stirring stretch struggle. Perhaps, a contender to the stretch, tired, but finished third. Moorfield ran out while leading at the first turn, which eliminated him. Medina then took the lead, closely followed by Perhaps. After shaking off the latter, the Dolan filly was forced to stand a hard stretch drive to stall off Bonfire, which closed fast and gamely next to the inner rail. The races were run over a heavy, but rapidly drying out track which should be in good shape tomorrow. Weather conditions were favorable, it being summerlike and a large crowd was in attendance. E. E. Major scored his initial succes of the meeting when his Leslie annexed the fifth race after outrunning Drummond through the last quarter. Drummond, the early leader, just lasted to save second place. Judge Breuer raced in the interests of J. B. Fields today. He will also train the horse. C. Diebels Red Squirrel won the opening race rather easily from the St. Bernard Stables Gymnast, which had set the early pace. Red Squirrel was close up throughout and when jockey Lee called on him at the stretch turn easily took command and increased it i with every stride until at the finish he was two lengths clear of Gymnast. After being passed by the winner Gymnast hung on gamely and easily outstayed Grey Rock. Nivlag was also an easy winner when he beat home Messines for the purse in the fourth race, a three-quarters mile dash. After following Kremlin to the half mile post Mes-. sines went to the front and holding com-j mand throughout scored easily by three lengths. This was the first winner in trainer P. Dolans double, the latter saddling Me-| dina for the feature, which she won. «
