USUAL FRIDAY CARD ♦ Little to Enthuse Over in Yesterdays Havre Racing. Old Peccant Runs Away With Steeplechase — Pine Program for Saturday Afternoon. ♦ HAVRE DE GRACE. Md., April 24.— With six of the seven races under claiming conditions and the other contest a four and a half furlong dash for maiden two-year-olds, there was not much to enthuse over in the racing this afternoon. But some of the finishes were excitingly close, and that atoned for the lack of quality in those contending. The steeplechase of the day was much of ■ farce when Woods Garths Peccant simply romped in front of his opponents, while another of the easy winners was Carlton. But if the Friday card was a cheap one. there will be real racing tomorrow with some of the best horses shown thus far this year engaged. The big Saturday feature is the Aberdeen, a 0,000 prize for the two-year-olds, over the four and a half furlong--* distance, but the setting for this stake is indeed a notable one. The Shenandoah Handicap of a mile and seventy yards has attracted a notable company and the Eclipse Handicap of three-quarters is another that, engages a swift running band. Altogether, it is the best card that has been offered thiu» far this year. Woods Garths old Peccant made a joke of the short course steeplechase when he stole away into a long lead the second turn of the course to be home an easy winner from Red Clover, with Jim Cof forth taking third from Brother Bill. Back of these came Bac-More, Irish Jig and Andahon, while Dixon Josephine bled and was pulled up before the finish. Andahon was the one to dash into an early lead under a stiff restraint, and Dixon Josephine was in second place, with Peccant being choked back in third place, while Red Clover and Brother Bill followed. The Queen City Stables pair, Bac-More and Irish Jig, were rather distant trailers. DASHES INTO LONG LEAD. It was not until a turn of the field had been completed that Mergler permitted Peccant to run, and the old son of Trap Rock quickly dashed into a long lead, and the race was as good as over. He continued to widen the gap that separated him from the others, while Red Clover soon found his way into second place, and he enjoyed a long lead over the others, which were so far out of the running that no contest remained, and the second turn of the course was a long drawn out procession. Peccant was in hand at the end and Red Clover was an easy second, but A. Williams ran a risk of losing third when he eased Jim Cuff roth, and Ferguson drove Brother Bill out vigorously to finish a close fourth. Irish Jig ran a disappointing race, but it was a race that should do him some good and he ought to give a better account of himself at the Pimlico meeting where he is engaged. The fences at Havre de Grace are so small that it is a course that does not afford a real jumping test and there may be many changes of form when the Pimlico field is reached. EASY FOR CARLTON. Carlton, racing for R E. Potts, was an easy winner of the three-quarters of the second race. It brought out rather a cheap band and Mrs. A. Swenkes Doctor Glenn was the one to race to second place, while Timeless saved third from Tony Sue. From a good start Carlton raced close to the pace to the head of the stretch, where he drew out readily, to win with plenty in reserve. There was something of a battle for second place, with Doctor Glenn proving best, and the others were more or less strung out. Timeless had raced close to the pace Oiroughout and, while he was tiring at the end, he had enough left to save third. This son of Hourless has been improving in recent races and ought to win his way if properly placed. Red Cap, the son of The Porter — Bleachers that races for his breeder, E. B. McLean, graduated from the maiden class in the four and a half furlongs dash of the third race. Exchequer, from the Flamingo Farm Stable, was the one to race to second place, and third was the portion of M. J. Cremens Zeod. From a good start Red Cap was in the front division and he readily raced Exchequer and Zeod into defeat until at the end he was going away with something to spare. Zeod began well, was in close quarters in the early racing and was coming again in the run through the stretch to out- Continued on tenth pace. i I » 1 ! , I i USUAL FRIDAY CARD Continued from first page. Bame Exchequer. Volunteer and Brush By were two in this company that caused some trouble at the post and they are both lacking in barrier education. It is possible that when they learn their lessons they will show to much better advantage. B. Hardings Leatherwood came back with a good race in the three-quarters of the fourth race when he led Maclean home, wita I Warning saving third from lOvergladc. Leatherwood was so much the best that he forced the pace from the start, and when the stretch was reached he drew out to make the victory certain. Maclean was never far from the pace and through the stretch he gained some ground, though Taylor was of little assistance In the final drive, and was going well at the end. Director was going well when he ran out badly at the head of • tho stretch. There was a great finish came out of the mile and seventy yards of the fifth race when C B. Winfreys Lucifer was winner from Wavecrest, with Volcano racing into third place, after having met with much in-tereference. After a delay a good start was effected and Volcano was alert leaving the barrier. He was showing the way around the first turn, but Lucifer was right with him and in the run through the back stretch there was a closing up until four or five were closely lapped and showing the way. Around the bend B.odeo was rushed through and for an instant he was showing the way and in his run there was some bumping, in which Volcano was knocked in the air and for a stride or two stumbled and almost went down. In the meantime Wave-crest had circled around on the outside, but she could not catch Lucifer in the run through the stretch, while Volcano, coming again, was up in time to save third,
