April 28.— The Preak-• ness jumped into world-wide fame in 1918, when the tenth running of the race brought out so many starters, that the Maryland Jockey Club, with a fine display of sports- manship, decided to run it in two divisions, with 5,000 added to each. In the first division, worth 2,250, to tho winner, ,500 second: ,500 third, and ,000 fourth, A. K. Macombers War Cloud, that had failed to win the Kentucky Derby for which he was confidently expected, landed the long end of the stake, piloted by "Johnny Loftus," after a drive with W. Martins Sunny Slope, Callahan up, s cond by a head, and G. D. Wideners Imported Lanius third, Johren, Orestes, Mary Maud, Foreground, Flags, Quietude, and George Starr, a wonderfully good field, finishing in the order named. In the second division W. E. Applegates Jack Hare Jr., Peak up, had little difficulty in winning 1,250 from S. Ross The Porter, second, and A. Neals Kate Bright, third, Trompe La Mort, now a successful sire, finishing fourth for J. E. Widener. It is worth while to remark here that foals by The Porter are ameng the most promising juveniles seen for a long time. We now come to the kings of the turf, the two great thoroughbreds whose performances have made history wherever the sport is known — Sir Barton and Man o War. It was fitting that the Preakness of 1919, to which 5,000 was added, should be won by such an outstanding colt as Commander Ross chestnut son of Star Shoot and Lady Sterling, which, fresh from a win in the Kentucky Derby and in Johnny Loftus capable hands, had no trouble in defeating J. W; McClellands Eternal, ridden by Schuttinger! and W. R. Coes Sweep On, McAtee up, the field including King Plaudit, Over There, Routledge, Vulcanite, Milkmaid, Drummond, Yurucari, Dunboyne not W. Jennings old racer and Vindex. HORSE OF THE CEXTURY. This was an age of giants, and the 1920 Preakness saw the "Horse of the Century," Man o War, take his place among the winners of the Preakness in a canter, ridden by Clarence Kummer, the Whitney pair, and an unusually good one, Upset and Wildair, second and third, with King Thrush fourth, and Donnacona, Blazes, On Watch, St. Alban and Fairway bringing up the procession. It is superfluous to speak of this great horse, but his time, 1:51%, almost equal to that of Watervale in 1911, was a sample of his powers if extended. The popular light blue brown cap of Harry Payne Whitney was first past the post in 1921, won by F. Coltiletti, on the ill-fated Broomspun, Maryland almost capturing the prize with S. L. Jenkins Polly Ann, ridden by Ted Rice, and J. E. Griffiths Jeg. second and third, over an unusually strong band of three-year-olds including Leonardo II, Trys-ter, Touch Me Not, Copper Demon, lion Homme, and Careful, and R. T. Wilson Jr., who hurried to Pimlico from the Pacific Slope, saw his colors carried to victory in 1922 with his homebred Pillory, Louis Morris up, defeating Hea, June Grass, Pirate Gold, Miss Joy, and others in a well run race In this year the added value of the Preakness was increased to 0,000, and Pillorys share of the stake was 1,000. TOM HEALETS POPULARITY. There is no more popular trainer in the country than "Tom" Healdy, and when for the second year in succession he furnished his employer this time Walter J. Salmon, with the winner of the 1923 Preakness, in Vigil by Jim Gaffney, dam Vignola, ridden by Mannelli, the grand stand at Pimlico rose as one man to cheer the entire outfit Th» Nevada Stock Farms Gen. Thatcher was second, Rialto third, and Chickvale, fourth Zev the mighty Rancocas candidate provin-the disappointment of the race, although his subsequent career is known the world over The field this year was a top notch one and included Tall Timber, Hobgoblin Martingale, Sallys Alley, and Goshawk, and it was a feather in trainer Healeys fedora to win over such a lot. In one of the worst racing days imaginable and in a sea of mud Bud Fishers Nellie Morse trained by A. B. Gordon, and ridden J. Mernmee, won the Preakness in 19M followed by H. P. Whitneys Transmute! second, Rancocas Stables Mad Play, third ind J. W. Beans bad acting, Donaghee. fourth. In the race Nellie Morse showed i high degree of courage and speed, and must be set down as a mudder of hiirh B legree. Entries for the 1925 Preakness closed April i. and the presence of the best three-year- ld colts and fillies in training is assured Until he went lame Sunday it appeared as f W. Daniels Master Charlie would be most ancied, but J. E. Griffiths Single Foot larry Payne Whitneys best, and a host of thers. will make it hot for anybodys horse n I riday, May 8.
