Croisant, the Purchaser, Said to Have Paid 0,000 for This Formidable Derby Eligible. » LEXINGTON. Ky., April 28.— The good colt Kentucky Cardinal that has been racing for Desha Breckinridge, the popular Kentucky-publisher, will carry the colors of G. F. Croissant in the Kentucky Derby to be decided at Churchill Downs on May 16. He changed ownership late this afternoon when, acting for Mr. Croissant, M. F. Shapoff consummated the deal. The price paid for the colt is said to have been in excess of 0,000, several reports having it that it was 0,000. The former figure is the more correct. Mr. Breckinridge felt a reluctance to part with the youngster for he has a mighty high regard for his ability to cope with the best that will meet in the big race. Trainer Milam swayed the publisher to sell. Milam will continue to train the colt while he is in Bex-ington and will then turn him over to Mr. Shapoff, who will put the finishing training touches for his start in the Derby. Trainer Shapoff immediately after the deal was closed engaged jockey M. Garner to ride him in the Derby. This releases jockey Stutts from his engagement and leaves him free to ride Quatrain should owner Frederick Johnson elect to substitute him for B. Breuning. It is understood that Mr. Johnson has second call on Stutts for Quatrain in the Derby. LEXIXGTOX, Ky., April 28.— Kentucky Cardinal, the good-looking colt that was sold today by Desha Breckinridge, the Lexington newspaper publisher, showed one of his best gallops of the training season when, Tuesday morning, he was worked a mile in 1 :46Vs, the only pretentious Derby gallop of the morning. The colts showing was meritorious, for he performed his task easily and he was han- dicapped by having to go wide all the way. due to the "dogs" being up. The track was Continued on sixteenth page. . 1 I : i i i 1 : I i t ] c r l KENTUCKY CARDINAL SOLD I Continued from first page. muddy from the overnight rains, but had i a good bottom. Jockey Willie Pool was I aboard and rated him to the satisfaction of I trainer Cal Milam, who did not want the , colt to extend himself. The colt was unaccompanied , as Mr. Milam afterward explained I he only sends a pacemaker along with Kentucky Cardinal when he wants him to do . his best. The colt went the quarter in :25%, half in :50, five-eighths in 1 :03% and the [ three-quarters in 1 :17%. Milam was well pleased with the work and commented favorably on his appearance by remarking that the colt has taken on flesh in the last few-weeks. | The only other Derby eligible to be galloped was H. P. Whitneys Bridesmaid, which went three-eighths in :3S%, in preparation for a mile work Wednesday. Horsemen are of the opinion after watching Supremus corking good race Monday, that Hal Price Headley will not have Alma-del as his sole reliance in the Derby. In his race Supremus was bumped at the start and forced back, but he came fast in the stretch and with better racing luck might have beaten Menifee. Should anything happen to Alma-del in his eastern engagements that would prevent him starting in the Derby, Supremus I will serve as a worthy standard bearer for | the Headley establishment in the Churchill ! ! Downs big race. It is not generally known that although in intensive training for the Derby that Supremus has been doing stud duty at the Headley farm. This spring he has already served ten or twelve of the Head-ley mares. It is a most unusual thing for a three-year-old to be asked to do this.
