KING NAM SURPRISES * Defeats Kentucky Cardinal and Chacolet at Churchill Downs. __ — « Troxler Colt Proves an Enigma Because of Inconsistent Running — Alleghan Victorious. ♦ IXnTISVIL,LK. Ky., May 20— The ,000 Merchants Association Handicap, at a mile and a sixteenth, which featured todays card, at Churchill Downs fell to King Nadi, with Buck second, and Kentucky Cardinal In third place. ■ The winners success was an outstanding surprise. King Nadi had been discredited so often that few In the big crowd gave him any serious consideration. The G. F. Croissant pair, composed of Stanwix and Kentucky Cardinal, were outstanding favorites, with Chacol* t and Graeme also coming in for attention. King Nadi was ridden well by J. McCoy, who kept him in a forward position from the start, and close to the inner rail. This enabled him to save much ground and it bone-fittM him vastly when all the others excepting Buck, raced wide on the stretch turn. Stanwix rushed into a long lead as if he would make a runaway race of it and succeeded in keeping far in the lead for the first half-mile. The others in back of him were strung out Indian file fashion, with Chacolet in last place and Kentucky Cardinal slightly in advance of her. Stanwix quit suddenly, when reaching the stretch and King Nadi and Buck passed him with ease. Kentucky Cardinal and Chacolet also began gaining, but both came wide and bumped into each other several times. Chacolet with her 120 pounds tired near the end. but Kentucky Cardinal managed to land in third place, passing Graeme in the last twenty yards. AN* EXIGMA. King Nadis success again makes him loom up as a contender for the three-year-old crown. He is however. h» Id an enigma, because of his inconsistency. He was beaten easily by Kentucky Cardinal in their previous meeting. One of the best two-year-old races from a time stand point over the Churchill Downs track, was witnessed this afternoon, when J. T. IiOoneys Alleghan, beat Rhinock home in the fast time of :oJ*i. for the five-eighths. Alleghan was lucky to win. Fronk gave him an excellent ride, which was a material factor in the result. The same kind of riding on Uhinock would have won with him. This colt had an advantage at the start. but instead of going into the lead, Garner elected to take him back and let Alleghan set the i ace. He made a menacing challenge in the stretch, but failed by a half length. My Colonel, a frequent winner at Miami, was the favored one in the race, but he raced as if short My Colonel has been slightly amiss since his arrival and may improve. Threatening weather did not prevent another big crowd from being in attendance during the afternoon. The racing was again wholesome and interesting. l*indar Peel won the third race, which brought fifteen, the limit number, to the post to nue six and a half furlongs. l*indar Peel was taken to the extreme outside from a number two position and the change of starting positions worked a benefit for him, as he began well and. racing with the leaders under restraint until reaching the stretch, took the lead and came away to win in a canter from 1-awless. The latter saved much ground on the turns and this enabled him to outstay Statler. The latter was grouped with others in the field. MAI1JKX RACE TO TRINKET. The maiden race, at four and a half furlongs, brought fourteen to the post, with Rit-ve- the favored one. He failed to get a portion of the purse. Trinket, a fielder, winning in a sharp dnve from Valence, with Nine Sixty in third pl*C*. Trinket was in front for most of the way. but had to be ridden hard at the end to land the purse. Hitter was claimed by Williams Bros, at a cost of ,000. The opener resulted in a surprise when Talcqua won in a sharp drive from Outcast, with By Gosh in third place. Talequas victory was a lucky one. for he probably would have been third had Outcast not sw. rved out In the last sixteenth or By Gosh been given a better ride. Talequa CbUowM Outcast closely from the start and saved much ground by rating CklM to the inner rail. The tin-ish between the trio was of the close order There is prospect of Almadel being shipped to Maple Il-ights to race in the Ohio State J »erby. Win. Snyder will be succeeded tomorrow by William Hamilton as starter during the last jane days of th- i:j ting. M. Schwartz has been granted a j » k. y s license and M. Hacket has b» « n given a trainers license. J. 11. McKee, managing the l.aBrae Stable is negotiating with Raleigh r.,Lston for the transfer of Qtaalafta* H. *jid Gaberdine.
