HIGH WATER SETS NEW MARK i Reduces One Mile Record at Maple Heights to 1:36%. i Emma Hoagland Graduates From Maiden Hanks, Winning First Race — Croissant Horses Expected. ■ ■ I CLEVELAND. Ohio. May 20.— W. S. Hea-tons High Water, after two disappointing performances at this meeting, made good this afternoon at Maple Heights Park when he took the measure of Strut Miss Lizzie and Julia ! e in the Garfield Handicap, the fifth and feature race. In so doing the winner reduced the track record for the mile to 1 :36%. Strut Miss Lizzie made it possible for the Heaton representative to accomplish this feat. She set a fast pace from the start and appeared an easy winner entering the stretch. At this point High Water moved up with a rush from the rear and finishing with rare gameness headed Strut Miss Lizzie in the last few yards. Julia Lee held the remainder ! safe. Hough and Heady and Zealot retired from the struggle beginning the last quarter. Favorable weather conditions prevailed and a large crowd witnessed the sport. Taking the lead in the first eighth Moon-brook held sway throughout in the sixth race. Sunny Hill easily disposed of La Orb for second place. At the first turn Belario and Royaline were caught in a jam and fell. ! Jockeys Ihillips and Farland, who had the mounts, both escaped with a shaking up. Preparations were made today for the arrival of the stable of G. F. Croissant, which will be shipped tomorrow from Louisville, Ky. Gibbons, Belie. Stanwix and Kentucky Cardinal will be included in the shipment. Jockey Mack Garner will probably have the mount on Kentucky Cardinal, which will be a starter in the Derby on Saturday. Word reached here this afternoon that jockey Karl Sande will be here on Saturday to ride in the Derby. He will likely have the mount on Millwick, which showed a sparkling performance here on Saturday and is one of the best prospects seen in action during this meeting. Among other candidates for Maple Heights three-year-old feature race, which has 0.-000 added, will be Elector, Glenister II.. El-sass and Almadel. The latter finished third in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. Jockey V. Taylor will have the mount on Almadel. It is probable that a field of at least twelve will face the barrier Saturday, contrary to last year, when the presence of Black Gold, the ultimate winner, discouraged a number of owners from sending their charges to do battle with the son of Black Toney — Useeit. Emma Hoagland, after threatening to win on several occasions, finally graduated from the maiden ranks when she captured the Continued on sixteenth Dace. HIGH WATER SETS NEW MARK Continued from first pace initial event. She led throughout and won handily from Helen T. and Sindora which provided the early contention. Fred Hayes, Columbus sportsman, register. 1 his first score of the season when Trafalgar scored an easy victory over Koniping Home and Jaunebar in the second race. The winm-r showed the way by a comfortable margin after going the first quarter.
