Patterson and carrying the colors of C. A. Mills, won the second running of the Ohio State Derby at Maple Heights this afternoon before a tremendous crowd that taxed the capacity of the popular course. H. P. Headleys Almadel finished second and Kentucky Cardinal third. Millwick displayed dazzling speed and. as- suming the lead soon after the start, showed the way without ever seriously being men- aced and won by a safe margin. Almadel was always a forward contender and raced in closest pursuit of the leader and, though the Headley representative was unable to close in on the son of Wrack, easily held Kentucky Cardinal safe for second place. The latter was away slowly and closed a big gap to finish third without, however, threatening the winner. The race was worth ,320. to the winner and the time was exceptionally fast. Like the Kentucky Derby, the race was run in a blinding rain, which drove the crowd to shelter under the grandstands. Hundreds failed to secure even a glimpse of! the race. The jockeys had hardly finished weighing out, when the skies cleared and the sun shone brightly. The downpour just served to lay the dust nicely. It was estimated that the crowd numbered 10,000, which greatly overtaxed the plant. The Jones Slock Farms Dolly Seth was favorite for the opening race, but bfgan slowly and then, after racing into a contending position, was pocketed in the stretch and Cuntinued on twentieth pace. "When the start came, Old Broadway went to the front, but his lead was of short duration, Miss Nuiry taking command and showing th-- way to the half mile pnst. with Coffield right at her heels and running under restraint. At the stretch turn, Sporri gave the old gelding his head and he went to the front without an effort and increased his Lad with every stride.
