HOIJJS TO MOONRAKER * Forced to Limit to Beat Great Man and Billy Warren. ♦ Candy Kid First in Highweight Handicap By Wide Margin — Rigel Easily. NEW YORK. N*. T.. May 26 — Moonraker, formerly of the Greentree Stable, but now racing for Clarence Buxton, was winner of the stake offering at Belmont Park today, when in a driving finish he was first home In the three-quarters of the Hollis Claiming Stakes. The race was worth ,150 to the winner and at the end the son of Broomstick was doing his level best to beat Mrs. Victor Vlvaudous Great Man with Frank K. Browns Billy Warren just a half length further away. The others were so thoroughly beaten as to cut no figure in the running. There was still a decided chill in the air for the sport, but the track dried out considerably from its recent drenching and the footing was good, though not fast. In addition to the Hollis there were interesting contests in the steeplechase and a highweight handicap. There was some delay at the start in the Hollis, but the six contestants left in good alignment with Moonraker and Great Man showing the way to the others. Moonraker had the inside position and shortly after swinging out of the back stretch Great Man had him headed, but in Uie meantime Billy Warren, outside the pair of them, was racing strongly. Great Man was still showing the way when rounding into the stretch, but Moonraker and Billy Warren were both close at hand and it was a three-horse battle all through the straight At the end McCleary was of no help to Great Man and when Pearce outrode him it was Moonraker that dropped his head down in front in the closing strides. Billy Warren tired in the stretch drive, though he was lapped on the first two. The opening race was a four and a half furlong dash through the straight for two-year-old fillies and Jos»ph E. Wideners Ru-thenla. making her first appearanc under silks, was winner from Samuel Ross Cinema, with K. E. Hitts Whatll I Do third. Right at the start Ruthenia swerved over on Cinema and the Ross filly was crowded over on Sox, which in turn interfered with some of the others, one of the sufferers being James Butlers Circus Rider. Sande quickly straightened Ruthenia and she was the one to cut out the running. Whatll I Do was right after her with Cimma third and the three of them dominated all the running. At the end Cinema proved to have more left that Whatll I Do and she was oniy beaten half a length by the Widener filly. Mill liimtW TO GI.K1T REACH. F. M. Algers Glen Reagh was a handy winner of the short course Westbury steeplechase Handicap worth just ,300 to the winner. At the end. he was showing the way to Joseph E. Wideners Barleycorn and Mrs. F. A. Clarks Tassel was the rne to be third. Nine went to the post, and with the exception of the Greentree Stables Damask, all finished without mishap. Damask made a bad landing* at the last jump and unseated Veitch. He w: s soundly beaten at the time. Ferguson stepped Glen Reagh into the lead at the drop of the flag and setting a fasl pace he never was headed. Rock Bass chased after him in the early stages, but he went badly lame in the running and was limping badly when h- returned to the scales. Sky Scraper II. for a turn of the field was also In the front division, but he tired badly before the journey was completed. Both Barleycorn and Tassel made their bids in the last half mile, and each drew up on Glen Reagh. In fact, the Barleycorn charge was so determined that for an instant he looked all over a winner, hut Ferguson still had something left with the Alger jumper and when he shook him up he held to his lead to be home winner by five lengths. Barleycorn beat Tassel two lengths for second place and the others were more or less strung out. DAMASKS BULL PERFORMANCE. The performance of Damask was a dull one and he showed scant speed at anytime while Sky Scraper II. had no excuse. Bulls-eye, one time a first class chaser, also ran a dull race and Morello II., that raced for Lord Airlie. was never able to reach a contending position. The third was a mile for three-year-old fillies and Walter J. Salmons Primrose was a handy winner, while L. A. Prices Sweet Ann closed a big gap to beat William Zieg-ler, Jr.s Gamble for second place and J. S. Cosdens Revoke was fourth. From a good start it was Sun Herodia that dashed into a good lead and she set a lively pace, but was plainly not up to the distance and she was beaten shortly after turning out of the back stretch. Barnes had been rating Primrose back of her and the Salmon lilly readily went into the command before the stretch was reached. In the meantime Gamble had gone around until she was in second place. All this time Sweet Ann had been last of the company, but heading for th.- stretch turn she began to pick up her company in gallant fashion. She continued to close through tlii stntch but at no time threatened Primrose, then at the end McAtee outrode Pone,- to land her in the place. The Hempsti ad Highweight Handicap over the three-quarters distance, proved easy for H. I. Whitneys Cindy Kid, the only three-year-old in tin race. He won by a wide margin from the Greentree Stables Wild Aster and Kings R.insom got up to be third in the last stride. Parke rush d Candy Kid Into a lung easy lead and, well clear of his company, rated him along with the it. suit that be still had plenty lift at the stretch turn, ui « .is still five lengths dear at the end. Wild A.st.r. under a long drive, beat the others by ■ . onate of length! for second place. While it W.1S a e]r,se thing fl|T till III l»l»"ll Kings Ransom,.
