PARKLING MAD PLAY Accounts for Queens County Han ¬ dicap in Fast Time Runs Mile in 136 with 128 Pounds Up Sarmaticus First in Hudson Stakes NEW YORK N Y June 20 Mad Play is a worthy brother of old Mad Hatter if not a better horse than his older brother That was proven conclusively at Aqueduct today when under a burden of 128 pounds he was winner of the mile of the Queens County Handicap running tho distance in the fast timo of 1 36 The race was worth 57700 to the winner and second place fell to A C Bostwlcks Shuffle Along with the Glen Riddle Farm Stables Whetstone third the Greentree Stables Cherry Pie fourth and tho Whitney pair of Klondyke and Flagstaff bringing up the rear rearIt It was the fourth consecutive running of tho Queens County that has gone to the Rancocas Stable the other winners haying been Mad Hatter the brother to Mad Play Zev and Grey Lag each a sterling horse of his day dayIt It was a real holiday crowd that was out for the sport and while some of the fields were small tho sport was interesting and tho performance of Mad Play made it a big day The Robert L Gerry Sarmaticua continued on his winning way by scoring in the iHudgon Stakes the twoyearold com ¬ panion piece to the Queens County Handicap HandicapThere There was little time lost at the post in the Queens County Handicap and Mad Play was first to show from a good start but when Sande moved up with Shuffle Along and made the pace a bit stiff Laverne Fator eased the Hildreth colt back slightly and rated him keeping a position close to the inner rail Flagstaff of the Whitney pair went after Shuffle Along but Mad Play was never back of the pair of them and Whetstone raced with him with Klon ¬ dyke bringing up the rear The first quar ¬ ter was run in 23 and the half in 4G and there Flagstaff had enough and as he tired Mad Play went into second place with Shuffle Along still racing strongly in front frontNot Not until well into the stretch did Fator call on Mad Play and as he ranged along ¬ side of Shuffle Along Sande drew his whip The Bostwick gelding is nothing if not game and he hung to Mad Play courageously but the son of Fair Play was levelling down in a manner that would not be denied and right at the end he drew out until he had two lengths to spare at the finish Whet ¬ stone outfinished the others to be third two Continued on twentieth page SPARKLING MAD PLAY Continued from firstpage lengths back of Shuffle Along and still two lengths further back Cherry Pie outf inished the Whitney pair It was a notable re ¬ newal of the race and Mad Play is a fit ting winner to have his name inscribed among the other great winners for he car ¬ ried the greatest weight that has ever been carried historyRobert to victory in its history Robert L Gerrys Sarmaticus added some ¬ thing to his fame when he was winner of the fiveeighths of the Hudson Stakes worth just 5200 to the winner At the end it was the Greentree Stables Navigator topweight of the party that was second and Harry Payne Whitneys Fiddlesticks beat Joseph E Wideners Paavo for third thirdLittle Little time was lost at the barrier and Paavo was first to show out of a good start He did not have speed enough to hold that position and it was not long before Sar ¬ maticus was showing the way on the inner rail and racing strongly stronglyAs As Sande rode Paavo hard in an effort to hold his position the colt swerved over to the rail and he was quitting under the punishment through the last eighth Navi ¬ gator came with a rush on the end that sent Coltiletti to the whip to hold the lead and his margin of victory was a scant length Fiddlesticks was well lapped on Navigator and Paavo just lasted to be fourth over Walter J Salmons Punjab The sport opened with a four and a half furlong dash for twoyearold fillies and it resulted in victory for George W Lofts Sox J P Jones Shampoo raced to second place and Mrs George Reads Mazetta was third Mazetta showing a great burst of speed was the one to show the way until inside the final eighth mark but Sox was not far away and Shampoo was heading the others In that final eighth Sox readily took com ¬ mand to win with something to spare while Shampoo outgamed the tiring Mazetta to talte second place while the others were badly strung out outThe The Weldship Steeplechase Handicap ie sulted in rather an easy victory for P F Joyces Houyhnhnm Bayard Warrens Upsal was second and Lord Airlies Moro was a distant third The only other starter was the Greentree Stables Eaglet and he made a bad landing over the ninth fence unseating P Brady BradyUpsal Upsal was the one to cut out the running for a turn of the course while Veitch just rated Houyhnhnm back of him and well within striking distance Eaglet was going well in third position until he came to grief while Moro jumped badly and was always far out of the contention contentionIt It was not until Eaglet was out of the raco that Veitch made a move with Houyhnhnm He readily went to Upsal and though Hunt hustled Upsal along to withstand the charge for a time it was apparent that Houyhnhnm could open up a lead as soon as he was asked In the front field he drew out with ¬ out any apparent effort and he was half a dozen lengths clear at the end endThere There came a disqualification out of the running of the mile and fivesixteenths of the sixth race when Skirmish after finishing first was set back for interference in the stretch and the race was awarded to A Mounces Comic Artist moving William Daniels Costigan into second place and giv ¬ ing third to Hot Dog the only other starter From a good start Skirmish was at onco taken out in the pace by Peternell and he led from end to end Johnny Maiben rated Comic Artist back of him and Costigan was third throughout with Hot Dog trailing In the stretch Maiben called on Comic Artist and as he drew alongside Skirmish Peternell bore out with his mount and there was some resultant bumping It was for that offense he was set back after having beaten Comic Artist a length
