W J SALMONS ZEPPELIN First in Dorvai Juvenile Stakes Opening Day Feature Edlsto Wins Mount Royal Purse for Seagram SeagramStablerBIg StablerBIg Crowd Despite Unfa UnfaTorable Torable Weather Conditions MONTREAL Que June 20 Zeppelin the consistent son of Colonel Vennie that races for the New York sportsman W J Salmon was the winner of the Dorvai Juvenile Stakes the feature event of the Dorvai Jockey Clubs opening days program this afternoon Zeppelin was ridden by J D Mooney made all of the pace and beat Thos Lynn by a length and a quarter in handy fashion Mooney shook him up at the six ¬ teenth post where Gaffsman moved up with a determined challenge but at the end he held his opponents safe Gaffsman began slowly and went wide while Thos Lynn saved ground at the top of the stretch stretchIt It was a splendid gathering that turned out to give the meeting a good sendoff and this too in spite of most unpropitious weather conditions Showers fell during the morning and off and on during the after ¬ noon The going was in fairly good condi ¬ tion and some keen contests came with the running of the different races The meet ing here this spring is held under new man agement Leo Dandurand and Joseph Cat tarinich now being identified with the club These gentlemen are extensively interested in the track at Maple Heights and the new course at Salt Lake City CityAn An added attraction the Mount Royal Purse at a mile and seventy yards was won by the Seagram Stables Edisto Kennedy took the latter back when WilkesBarre went to the front at the turn into the back stretch Continued on twentieth page W J SALMONS ZEPPELIN Continued from first pace He waited until straightened out for the final run before making his challenge and in the final eighth he outgamed Bradleys Toney to beat tiie latter by a nose This pair staged a thrilling finish which lasted all the last eighth eighthBlack Black Hackle cantered home in front of his opponents in the first race a dash of a mile and seventy yards for which he was favorite He was ridden by F Hastings followed the pace until rounding the far turn where he slipped through next the rail and at the end drew away into a long lead Passing the judges the winner was seven lengths in front of Liege which was second a length and a half in front of Sir Galahad II IIReliable Reliable made most of the pace in the sec ¬ ond race shaking off Carlton after they went a quarter and leading for the remainder of the way In the stretch run he had to be ridden out to withstand a challenge from Fighting Cook which came from behind and finished fast in the middle of the track Carl ton was a tiring third beaten another length for second place placeOdd Odd Seth made a runaway of the third race The field was sent away to a moving start and Odd Seth was quickest to begin In the stretch run Hernandez was forced to shake him up to stall off Mabel K which finished with good courage Pablo was third and Triumph fourth The latter began very slowly and raced wide the entire distance
