Davenport Davenport I Rain, accompanied by a cold wind, visited this section early this morning and continued throughout the day, ruining what chances there was for a fast track for the opening. Track superintendent Pending put every available man at his disposal to work on the track, in an effort to put it into some sort of condition. This morning it was fetlock deep in slop and morning trials were more or less suspended. ! i The program which is offered for the opening day is a good one. with well matched fields. In addition to the Inaugural Handicap, tho Promenade Purse at five and a half furlongs for three-year-olds, and the Twin Cities Purse for four-year-olds and over at three-quarters, are down for decision. The sport will be ushered in with a dash of a half mile for two-year-olds, maiden colts and geldings. Kleven were nominated for this dash, of which seven are first time starters. The final race of the day is a claiming race at a mile and a sixteenth for four-year-olds and over, to which seven have been named. In the Inaugural Handicap, about which the program is built, track conditions will play an important part in the number of starters. WINTER RACERS FAYORED. The majority of those entered are first time starters of this year, while it is more likely that the popular choice will come from those that were seasoned by winter racing. Ixninger. Harass. I,eonard O. and Wild Aster appear to be the favored one.t. while Forecaster, Ileparation, Single Foot and Senator Norris seem to be the choice of those who wintered in this section. Continuing for thirteen days, the Southern j Maryland meeting will he marked by a re-| newal iext Saturday of the ,500 Capitol j Handicap, a dash of seven-eighths for three-I year-olds exclusively; Saturday, April 10, of ; the ,000 Prince Ceorges, a gallop of one mile and a sixteenth for three-year-olds and over, and Tuesday, April 13, of the Bowie Kinder-j garteu. a ,000 dash of a half-mile for two-I year-olds. Some 65,000 will be the portion | of the supporting horsemen in the thirteen I days, a daily average of 5,000. There are approximately eight hundred ; thoroughbreds at Benning and Prince Georges Park, and a majority of these are winter seasoned. Still, there are three hundred or more availables belonging to strong eastern stables that did not take part in Louisiana and Florida racing. These fresh horses should keep the winter campaigners pretty busy, particularly in races for two- and three-year-olds of the better sort and stakes. Prince Ceorges Park is situated midway J between Baltimore and Washington. It is Continued on «c oiii| [ ;!;•• MARYLAND RACING TODAY Continued from first pnge served by the best equipped electric railway of the East and, since last fall, reached by stone automobile highways from Washington and Baltimore. Salient features of the Havre de Grace meeting will be revivals of the Aberdeen and Chesapeake stakes, dashes of a half-mile and one mile and a sixteenth for two- and three-year-olds, respectively; and the Harford and Philadelphia handicaps, at three-quarters and a mile and a sixteenth for three-year-olds and over, each of 0,000.
