Jeffords Tritun. a colt by Golden Broom— Bathing Girl, won the seventeenth renewal of the Pimlico Nursery at Pimlico this afternoon. He was ridden by Albert Johnson, came from behind rounding the far turn and in a sinew-straining finish heat Bed Bocket by a nose. The pair fought it out from the top of the home stretch and the winner displayed great courage. Bed Pocket, an odds-on favorite, outstarted his field when the start came and led to the stretch turn, where he bore out. This cost him the race. Triton, a had barrier horse, kept rearing at the post and in one of his lunges unseated Johnson. When the start came he was away in fourth poettioa and outrun in the early stages. Johnson skinned the rail entering the home stretch, where he took the lead. When Smith got Bed Bocket straightened out again he came again and at the finish was gradually gaining on the winner. He would have beaten him in another stride. Northland was third, beaten by a neck for second place. An immense gathering turned out at the old hill top course to give the eleven-day meeting of the Maryland Jockey Club a good send-off. The program was a high class one and stirring contests were in order. Society was much in evidence. The long string of boxes in front of the stand and the clubhouse were filled with the first families Of Maryland and Virginia. Iargc delegations came from Washington. Philadelphia and the surrounding cities and the crowd was one of the largest that ever turned out here on an opening day. Pacing conditions were perfect, the weather being balmy and springlike, while the track was fast. Another stirring finish came with the running of the Merchants Handicap when Golden Spire just lasted long enough to beat Man by a head, fields waited with Golden Spire until well around the far turn before making bis effort. Filtering the home stretch lie caught and passed Golden Bale and in the stretch run stood a long hard drive. Mars stumbled when the start came, but recovered quickly and at the finish came again. Punks Green and Saint Pancras declined in the Green Spring Valley Steeplei hase. in Which four started. Jt was a good betting i ace, with Jabrador always having a call over the others. Ixubrador showed a fine performance. Taking the lead when the start came, he drew away, and at the first of the field Cheyenne hail him under slight restraint, and every time that Byera would move up with Barleycorn he had a little in reserve and would again draw away. In the meantime, Crawford, riding in his usual patient way. was rating Ipsal behind the leaders. He never made a more until the Continued on sixteenth page PIMLICO INAUGURAL Continued from first page last half mile, when he began moving up, and at the last jump, when he was on almost equal terms with the winner, Cpsal made a bobble and fell. It was an unfortunate accident, as he looked a certain winner at the time. With Cpsal out of the way. Labrador again drew out, and at the finish he had a lead e f two lengths and a half over Barleycorn. The winner ran the two miles in 3:18%. a record for the stake. The net value of the stake was ,190. Digrius made his exponents look cheap in the second race. Beginning in front, he drew away into a long lead, and at one stage was five lengths in front. Walls had him I in hand, and at the finish he was three lengths in front of Pillotta with a lot in reserve. The latter ran a good race. He is a colt of immense size and a handy one. He began well and always held the ollnrs safe. Verdi and Contemplate, which finished third and fourth, began from the outside and both were carried wide at tin- turn out of the back stretch and all around the far turn. Contemplate is from the good mare-Quiet ude, and he ran like he may develop into a useful racer. Bevolver. one of the Alan o War colts in the Glen Kiddle Stable, began slowly and was never a factor. Martiugali- proved a disappointment in the third race when he was beaten by Highwayman. After his good race at Havre de Grace, Martingale looked to be in a soft ■POt and was heavily backed. Hr was ridden by Weiner, went to the front when the Start came and made the pace until the final eighth, where he collapsed. Howaid rod- a will judged ride on Highwayman. He dropped in behind Martingalt- and never made a move until straightened out for the final run. When catted on. Highwayman had something in n serve, and he r« sponded j with a rush, and in the final eighth easily-disposed of the tiring Martingale to win by j a couple of lengths. Uidy Bountiful was third. Bhe ran a pood race and would have been a keen factor had she escaped a jam which came after the start. Callahan pulled ; her up. and she was last of her field at ! the first turn.
