CENTENNIAL CENTENNIAL FALLS FALLS TO TO GENERAL GENERAL HALDEM HALDEM AN; AN; POMPEY POMPEY IN IN TRIUMPHANT TRIUMPHANT DEBUT DEBUT A A T T JAMAICA JAMAICA FAVORITE FOR DERBY • Makes Good in First Start in the Wood Stakes. ♦ Draws Away From Navigator After Stiff Argument — Colorado Stakes to Draconis. » NSW YOBK. N. Y.. May 1.— Pompcy. W. B. Coes hope for the Kentucky Derby and the champion two-year-old of last year, made good at Jamaica Saturday by winning the Wood Stakes, at a mile .and seventy yards. Navigator, from the Greentree Stable, save him a stiff argument and he felt the sting of the lash in the stretch, but he answered the call like the good, game colt he is and was going away at the end. racing the distance in 1:12. The stake was worth ,700 to the winner. The lure of seeing Pompey in action resulted in an attendance that was larger than the opening day of the meeting. The weather was a bit chilly for comfort and there was a high wind blowing, but the track was at its best and the sport was worthy of the great crowd. A second feature of the afternoon was the Colorado Stakes, for two-year-olds, that resulted in success for Gifford A. Cochrans Draconis. which scored by a wide margin. Mosque and Amberjaek were scratched from the Wood Stakes, leaving seven to go. and of these Mr. Coe was represented by both Pompey and Black Maria. The Greentree Stable had Incaster to bear Navigator company and the others were William Zie-gler, Jr.s. Kspino. the Bancocas Stables Nichavo and H. P. Whitneys Blondin. POMPEY IN THE LEAD. Not much time was lost at the barrier and Breuning rushed Pompey away in the lead, but almost at once took hold of him slightly. Kspino was in a bit of a tangle leaving, while I Lancaster and Blondin also left sluggishly. Navigator was alert as he left and Kllis sent him right after Pompey until when the stretch was reached he was lapped on the son of Sun Briar and Cleopatra. Put Hreun-ing was sitting still on the Coe champion and riding a wonderfully confident race. Navigator kept right at his chase through j the run in the back stretch and there Black 1 Maria moved up on the outside, while Kspino. after his slow beginning, was also rushed along at a sprinting clip, the others following along in fairly dose order. Leaving the back stretch Breuning permitted Navigator to draw away from Fompey and for an instant the shout went up that the champion was beaten. But Pompey was far from being beaten though he was loafing a bit. Navigator swung into the stretch a length to the good and then it was that Lreuning roused Pompey with his whip. Tho handsome bay responded but Navigator was going truly well next to the rail and he would not come back. He was still showing the way an eighth out and again Pompey felt the sting of the whip. This time he responded more cheerfully and stride by stride he wore Navigator down until at the end be was a length and a half clear. This stretch battle had taken the pair of them out four lengths before Kspino, which in turn beat Black Maria by a length and two lengths back of her came Nichavo. LOAFING IN EAHI.Y RACING. There were some who were not entirely impressed by the showing of Iompey but it seemed that the only reason for his being headed by Navigator was the fact that he was loafing a bit. That was pretty conclusively shown by the manner in which he finished. The race will undoubtedly do him much gooel and the fact that he was driven in the running will add to the benefit of the performance. Draconis, Gifford A. Cochrans home-bred son of North Star III. and Marie Odille. was an easy winner of the dorado Stakes, worth ,650 to the owner. He made a show of his company and when he ran the distance in :W% be had equalled the record for the stake mode by Great Man in 1022. Little time was lost at the barrier and Piaconis was so much best of his company •hat he dashed away into a long lead in the first eighth. Once safely out there Bichards took hold of him and when he ran to the first half in :16V5 be had his field dizzy l ack of him. At the end he was under restraint and a full six lengths before the Greentree Stables Arrogant, with the Belair Stables E -irmaliou a length and a half farther away tuuliumU oil siiteeutli iiugej FAVORITE FOR DERBY Continued from first pace to beat James Butlers Glowing for the short end of the stake. Arrogant and Captain Kettle, one of the EL P. Whitney starters were the ones to show the way to those battling along back of Draconis but in the stretch Captain Ke.tle tired badly and there it was that Sarmalion racetl over hitn. Draconis is a colt of extreme speed and while a report was circulated before the running that three-eighths was about his limit he finished out the five-eighths in a fashion to suggest that he would have been just as easy a winner at three-quarters or even seven-eighths. There was an accident in the running of the opening five and a half furlongs dash for maidens when Paddy Hynes stumbled and went down just as he started. He was on the inside position but could not be blamed for the fall, and F. Stevens, who had the mount, had a lucky escape from injury. This race fell to F. F. Cooneys Alkali Ike. well ridden by Sande. George D. Wideners Marcellus raced to second place, and the Green-tree Stables Lonesome was a fast finishing third. Marcellus was the one to cut out most of the running, but he was closely attended by Bombardier. Vetera and 1-ionesome, while Alkali Ike, leaving from an outside position, began slowly and was outrun in the early-stages. Marcellus killed the others off. but Alkali Ike was steadily working his way up on the outside, and in the final eighth he came to Marcellus. The Widener gelding tired badly at the end and Alkali Ike was going away. — *
