HORSE BREEDING VAGARIES General Haldeman Another Proof of Small Breeders Opportunity Some Interesting Data in Connection With Blood of Ancestors of Centennial Futurity Winner Still another proof that the small breede of bloodstock frequently has his day in court and also that good horses conic from un ¬ expected sources is shown in the successes scored this spring by the Kenton Stable with their twoyearold colt General Haldeman a Bon of Thunder Storm and La Dolores by IJoanerges which beat the crack filly Ac ¬ complish in the Centennial Futurity at Lex ¬ ington ingtonThe The Kenton Stable is composed of Messrs Payne and West and their farm is in Ken ¬ tucky on the Licking River about twenty miles from Cincinnati It is a small estab ¬ lishment and has only been in operation a few years Kenton Farm is not in the Blue Grass belt but this remarkable plant so beneficial in bloodstock production is found at Kenton just as it is in nearly every part of the commonwealth of Kentucky KentuckyWhile While General Haldeman reflects credit on Kenton still greater honor must be given to the Kirklevington Stud of Richard T Wilson Jr as the juvenile is by Thunderstorm a Bon of Olambala and Nightfall by Voter the next dam the great English mare Sundown which is a scintillating example of the excel ¬ lence of the Sunbeam family Thunderstorm is a brother to that good race horse and promising sire Campfire Mr Wilson bred and raced both Campfire and Thunderstorm winning the Futurity and other fine races with the former While many pounds inferior to his elder brother Thunderstorm was a fre ¬ quent winner and when he fell into the hands of the late John A Payne father of J L Payne of the present firm of Payne and West ho determined to give the horse a chance in the stud studBLENDING BLENDING OF RARE BLOOD BLOODThere There were a number of mares at Kenton that would have been selected by experts in preference to La Dolores as a mate for Thunderstorm but the Bend Or and Austra ¬ lian cross has worked out beautifully in the case of General Haldeman and having done so none can very well quarrel with success successLa La Dolores was a daughter of La Tour an imported daughter of Hunting Town the latter a moderate racehorse The next dam Noddy was by Thurio while she in turn was from Mrs Bardell by Mr Winkle Boanerges was by Spendthrift greatgrand sire of Man o War from imported Lland rino by The Arrow The Arrow won six unimportant races as a threeyearold and did not score thereafter He was a son of DEstournel from Archeress by Long Bow next dam Tingle by Slane which was in turn from Vibration by Sir Hercules HerculesDEstournel DEstournel which was by Parmesan from an unnamed mare by Chanticleer was chiefly noted for his bad temper Slane was by Royal Oak and was a Horse of great size and stamina winner of the Swinley Stakes and other good events while he was second In the Ascot Gold Cup Sir Hercules byj Whalebone won the Claret Stakes and was third in the St Leger LegerBoanerges Boanerges was a horse of fine size but was cursed by a bad temper and next to Box was about as bad a post horse as has been seen in this country Every starter that had to get him away with a field of horses was happy when the huge chestnut left on anything like even terms with his competitors It wasnt that he wouldnt break He was over anxious and the chief difficulty was in controlling him He would carry an assistant starter and his jockey up and down the course for long periods while the others waited for him and ex ¬ hausted the patience of everybody everybodyBoanerges Boanerges won many good races for Um ¬ brella Bill McGuigan Bishop Pool and D JL Hogan He could beat most of the second class horses and give a first class one a lot of trouble if he caught him out of form Like Spendthrift his sire he was a chestnut in color but he had none of the sweetness of disposition that was a charac ¬ teristic of this fine race horse He evidently inherited his temper from DEstournel DEstournelThe The story of General Haldeman would be incomplete without reference to Ornus his great grandsire This horse was by Bend Or from Ashgrove by Albert Victor He was bred by John A and A IT Morris and was highly tried by their trainer Wymlham Walden WaldenORNUS ORNUS FAULTY LEGS LEGSFaulty Faulty underpinning caused Ornus to be thrown into the discard by that stern task ¬ master who had to have sound horses to stand the strenuous preparation he gave them Wyndham Waldens horses were never short Ornus fell into the hands of a colored man named Cloyd who won a few races with him one at 100 to 1 at St Asapli Va when he beat a fairly good band of sprinters and the last at the Fair Grounds track at New Orleans over a course that was fetlock deep in the clinging gumbo soil for which Louisiana is famous At that time the horse didnt have a good leg under him He was so lame after the race that he could scarcely hobble off the course courseOrnus Ornus was a livercolored chestnut with lop cars He was not prepossessing but he had the element of greatness in his makeup When he became the property of John G Greener of Nashville Tenn who had a few fine mares and a knowledge of bloodlines Ornus made good When mated with the Virgil mare Blue and AVhite he got Olam ¬ bala one of the stoutest and best campaigners tho American turf has known in the last generation One has only to read of the caretr of Olambala which for the number of his progeny has a record second to none t know that the line is carrying on
