DEBUTANTE VICTRESS Thirteen Sixty Carries H P Gard ¬ ner Colors Successfully Easily Proves Best in PreDerby PreDerbyDay Day Offering at Downs Big Crowd Present LOUISVILLE Ky May 14 The Debu ¬ tante Stakes inaugurated in 1895 when Amanda was victress and run annually since was the outstanding feature at Church ¬ ill Downs for tire entertainment of a big throng of spectators which included many newcomers here to witness the decision of the FiftySecond Kentucky Derby renewal Saturday SaturdayThirteen Thirteen Sixty racing in the colors of Herbert P Gardner led home a dozen other fillies of her own age and won the 57SGO which went to the winner with consummate ease easeEthel Ethel Dear displaying good speed finished in second place with Krick wearing Flora nada down in the last seventy jards to take third money The race was fast from the start the fiveeighths being negotiated in 100 It marked the first time the race was decided over the distance of five eighths of a mile mileThirteen Thirteen Sixty and Sixteen Sixty were coupled in the wagering but Sixteen Sixty nexer figured seriously after the first eighth and was far back at the finish Thirteen Sixty was restrained while Mary Helen and Ethel Dear showed the way but after she was straightened out for the stretch racing she raced past the leaders easily and was well in hand at the finish Candy May came in for considerable support but her chances were partly ruined when her rider took her back at the start and raced her wide for the entire trip She showed a good effort and will give the winner a sharp battle under equal racing conditions conditionsFJORANADA FJORANADA FAIIUKE FAIIUKEFloranada Floranada was another that disappointed her showing was a good one but she gave way in the last strides to Krick KrickIdeal Ideal weather and track conditions pre ¬ vailed this afternoon The attendance was by far the largest midwest audience ever gathered at the course The racing was spec ¬ tacular and close finishes kept the crowd in a state of excitement excitementLee Lee O Cotner a pronounced favorite was winner of the mile race which brought out some good ones including the newcomer Needle Gun The latter got up in the last stride to down American Son The trio of placed ones dominated the race all during the stretch Lee O Cotner leading the other two Though he was well in hand at the finish he had to be roused at one stage of I the stretch racing to keep in front of Ameri can Son SonA A B Hancocks Peekaboo captured tho opening race for which fifteen maidens of all ages over threeyearolds started She won after wearing down Our Buddy which had raced into a ten lengths lead at one stage Vivandiere also racing well finished second outstaying Barluna coupled with Kid Boots as the Audley Farm entry Our Buddy quit almost to a walk in the stretch stretchBEAUTY BEAUTY STAK FIRST FIRSTMaiden Maiden twoyearolds including some first time starters here comprised the field in the second race and resulted in victory for Beauty Star carrying the Chula Vista Stables colors Mahatma and Carrie Belle fought it out for second place which the former captured There was considerable support for Wolf y but he raced wide round ¬ ing the first turn while in a contending position and he was eased up He came with a rush during the stretch racing when urged hard and finished close to the leaders leadersPayman Payman furnished the SJirprise of the third race when he wore down Widgeon after the latter had taken a long lead and appeared the winner Payman came with a tre ¬ mendous rush through the stretch that car ¬ ried him past the leader Widgeon was best of the others and Mac OBoy managed to finish in advance of Chiva to take the minor part of the purse The start here was a bad one with Elias O and Lady Von suffering sufferingThe The Valley Station Purse at six and a half furlongs for a purse of 1SOO serving as the secondary feature found J X Cam dens Dark Phantom the winner from Flor ¬ ence Mills with Teak in third place The pace in this race was fast Bobby with a high display of speed showed the way in the early stages but she had enough after going half a mile Dark Phantom and Florence Mills took up where Bobby left off and fought it out to the finish Dark Phan ¬ tom winning by half a length Teak began slowly but closed a big gap in the stretch Bobby quit almost to a walk in the last sixteenth
