SANFORD AND SANDE Prove Winning Combination in the Montana Handicap Beats Lancaster and Flat Iron in inFridays Fridays Jamaica Feature Avisack n Disqualified JAMAICA X Y May 14 Tlie Montana at a mile aiul seventy yards attracted the best field of the afternoon at the Jamaica course and it resulted in a victory for the Rosedale Stables Sanford ridden by Earl Sande after a drive with Lancaster from the Greentree Stable while G A Cochrans Flat Iron was third thirdliain liain which fell heavily during the night changed the track conditions into deep and sloppy mud and as a result there were nu ¬ merous withdrawals There was no out ¬ standing feature and on the whole platers dominated the card cardIn In the running of the Montana there was no delay at the post and the field left in good alignment Flat Iron and Flag of Truce were the ones to display the most speed and drew away into a commanding lead racing heads apart Sanford under careful guiding was well up and raced lapped on Hedge Fence while Lancaster brought up the rear The latter lost much ground throughout by going wide at all turns Heading for home Flag of Truce felt the effects of the early pace and dropped back while Sande rushed Sanford into the lead The latter was kept under pressure throughout to stall off the final rush of Lancaster The latter finished fast on the outside and was wearing the winner down Richards through the final sixteenth did not persevere with Flat Iron when he tired and bore in toward the rail railDespite Despite the cloudy and unsettled conditions the attendance was well up to the average averageOPEXKJl OPEXKJl TO FKRKASH FKRKASHCharles Charles Ferrarns Ferrash ridden by F Catrone proved winner of the opening race of the afternoon which brought together a band of platers to race threequarters under claiming conditions Zero Hour raced to the place while Fiddlesticks was third The winner dominated the running throughout and after racing Fiddlesticks into defeat held the fast finishing Zero Hour safe The latter was slow to settle into his stride He worked his way up on the inside and finished going fastest of all Fiddlesticks after forcing the early pace tired badly when put to a drive but was an easy third thirdC C A Hartwells Liholiho a threeyearold that was bred in Hawaii accounted for the second race which was at a mile and seventy yards Ridden by jockey Ellis he drew away into a commanding lead and never left the issue in doubt The Rancocas Stables Cry ¬ stallite was second while H W Maxwells Salta was third The start was poor and Liholiho at home in the going beat the others away and Ellis let him race into a commanding lead before taking him under restraint Crystallite which floundered about in the first sixteenth settled into his stride and took up the chase after the flying leader but was not equal to the occasion when called upon Salta was a prominent factor throughout held his position well and although put to a drive could not menace the leaders leadersEASY EASY FOK JULIE JULIEA A well matched band of fillies and mares threeyearolds and upward started in the third race of the day and the winner turned up in J Sciaccalugas Julie ridden by R Carter in easy fashion from J A Harpers All In All while Basquaise which started in the Rancocas Stable colors was third No time was lost at the post and the field left in good alignment Julie proved best in the going and drew away into an easy lead and dominated the situation throughout and at no stage left the result in doubt All In All steadily improved her position on the inside and moved up with determination but was not good enough to overhaul the leader al ¬ though at the end she had a safe margin over Basquaise The latter raced well throughout but the dimunitive apprentice Sulick could not get the best out of her The others with the exception of Sox which showed a flash of early speed were outrun outrunA A disqualification came out of the running of the fifth race which was for twoyear olds when T LoscaJzos Avisack II was set back for interfering with J W Beans Beautiful Flower rounding the turn and the race was awarded to the Swingalong Stables Solid Gold with Beautiful Flower second and Bonnie Khayyam third thirdThe The field left in good alignment and it was Solid Gold that was rushed into the lead She was quickly joined by Avisack II but the latter in moving up bothered Beau ¬ tiful Flower and forced Weiner to take up sharply to keep from going down The two leaders drew away and furnished a spirited duel through the stretch and at the end McTaggart landed his mount a winner The verdict did not seem to agree with the ma ¬ jority of the spectators and there was a slight display of hostility Weiner on his return to the scales lodged a complaint of foul After interrogating the patrol judges and jockeys Sharpe and McTaggart the stewards ordered Avisack lls number taken down
