Dick Welles Selections SelectionsAt At Churchill Downs The long looked for day in the turf world nas arrived There are Derbys and there are Derbys but none like the renowned Ken ¬ tucky Derby run each year at the historic Churchill Downs course That there will be an immense crowd and a race well worth going many miles to see goes without saying The only regret so far as the Derby is con ¬ cerned is the fact that the Coffroth Handicap winner Carlaris could not be made ready for the race It was a sad bit of misfortune that the prepost favorite was in such condi ¬ tion that his being sent to the post would perhaps end his useful racing days for all time With him in the race the contest would have been one such as never has been seen before Each section would have been represented with an able racer and it would have evolved into a real sectional affair rather than the east against Kentucky We should be satisfied that the two outstanding first time that this early race has cYer brought together two such stars May the best one win with our hopes pinned on the Bradley star starBARTER BARTER DRY 3IOOX BLAXC SEING SEINGIn In the opening race seme fast sprinters will meet over the threequarters distance and here we are selecting BANTER to cop honors He demonstrated in his first appear ¬ ance here this spring that he is still the same old honest racer In that out he had to step fast to beat DRY MOON and Moms Boy but gave his all to win by a nose We are thinking that race did him more good than harm and today should see home the winner again but with a more comfortable margin to spare Since finishing a nose behind BANTER the Croissant racer DRY MOON was winner in his last start He is going to prove mighty tough competition but BAN ¬ TER is the better of the two BLANC I SEING which was an intended starter in the Coffroth only to go amiss shortly before the running is reported fit again and if so will surely be heard from in the race His races at Jefferson Park were of high order and he can step with the best of them when in trim MARVIN MAYS Kentucky debut was below his real form and he may do better today todayCAXDY CAXDY ROCK KING BASIL PORT STAR STAROf Of the juvenile maidens that are to hook up in the second tilt CANDY ITOCK looks to be the best play The son of Negofol turned in a mighty nice performance in his last race when he just missed getting the de ¬ cision by a nose He seems to improve as the race progresses and the longer distance of fiveeighths should be all to his liking KING BASIL is another one that is slow to get going and it is thought that he will bene ¬ fit also by the longer distance In his train ¬ ing moves he did everything asked of him like a good one but has failed to display that speed in a race Maybe today will be dif ¬ ferent PORT STAR was well meant in his first out but did not race as expected and as a result finished behind the money earners He raced greenly and it may be that he needed that race to fit him for todays effort If he would race to his trials he would prove a dangerous contender The race SWORDS ¬ MAN ran his last out was an improvement and he may be able to set a portion of the purse purseFAXTOCHE FAXTOCHE LADY IXEZ FIRETOMA FIRETOMAPerkins Perkins has the veteran FANTOCHE in exceedingly rare form at the present and he looks to be the most probable winner of the third event His last three outs were all wins his last one being achieved here winning by four lengths He will not find the company so easy here but basing on his present good condition should be the one to score LADY INEZ proved in her first ap ¬ pearance at this course since her trek from the Tijuana track that she is going to prove troublesome for the winner She was away none too well but finished fast and at the end was gradually getting to the winner If she were to give the same effort today she should be close up at the finish FIRE TOMA is said to be ready for a winning per ¬ formance and for that reason we are expecting him to share in the purse PAT CALHOUNS last two races rate him well up and he may run his score to three TORCHILLA DR STREETT DERRIXGER DERRIXGERIn In the Orchard Hall Purse which proceeds the Derby the best play on the card is noted This one is TORCIIILLA a winner in four of his six starts There really doesnt seem to be anything in the race that is apt to cause the son of Torchbearer any trouble He can negotiate any kind of going be it dry or muddy and all he needs to do to win this purse1 is to run the same race as his last one which found him home an easy winner by three lengths DR STREETT is a re ¬ ported fast one and as he is making his maiden start not much is known of what he will do against competition A race to his trials should find him the closest to the win ¬ ner at the finish DERRINGER is another first time starter and basing on his workouts should share in the money He is a fine looker but looks dont win races He may have the speed also Today will tell how ¬ ever The others in the race dont count for much with the possible exception of PA DONA He ran one fair race at Lexington and may be able to horn in at the finish basing on that race raceBUBBLING BUBBLING OVER POMPEY DISPLAY DISPLAYFrom From all appearances the Derby is going to be a two horse race between BUBBLING OVER the E R Bradley representative and POMPEY which races for W R Coe and the hope of the East These two were classed as the best in their juvenile year and it is the Derby to settle that dispute BUBBLING OVER was last seen in competition in the Blue Grass Stakes at Lexington and in that race he scored so decisively that he left little room for doubt as to hit fitness for todays race POMPEY captured the Wood Stakes at Jamaica and his training moves were perfection His mile in 139 stamps him as a real racer and if he displays the same speed in the race will take an awful beating The public appearance of BUBBLING OVER in the Blue Grass settled in our mind which is the better colt and we are not looking for him to be beaten if he runs the same kind of a race today DISPLAY was a surprise winner of the Preakness Stakes and as such must be given some recognition Any horse capa ¬ ble of beating a field such as he vanquished last Monday is all race horse Today will settle whether or not that win was a fluke Whitney usually has a word to say in the running of the Derby and his dependance totlay is BLONDIN which finished a head belrnd DISPLAY in the Preakhess Some say he ran a better race than the latter nj he has a fine chance to prove it today Should the track become muddy through rains during the night our selection would shift to RHINOCK He is a mudder of the first flight as will be demonstrated should the going be anything but dry dryKIXG KIXG XADI SAXDY MAX GIBLOX In keeping with the Derby Day program a fine field meets in the sixth the Brown Hotel Handicap at six and a half furlongs KING NADI the sensation of last year is making his first appearance of this season and judging from reports is still the same high class racer He is asked to give chunks of weight away to every other starter but should not find it too hard a task if he is in good coridition SANDY MAN the only horse to beat the wonder Carlaris at the last Tijuana meeting is in with 96 pounds and at the weights rates next best His last race was a good one too when he finished second to Dark Phantom GIBLON the Chicago Special winner at Hawthorne in 1924 is also making his first start of the year and if in any form at all will prove a dangerous contender1 If ARCADY would run one of his good races he may share in the purse purse3IORXIXG 3IORXIXG CLOUD KIXG TUT KIXG GORIX II IIMORNING MORNING CLOUD was given a race here the other day but was badly beaten At Tampa she did nothing but win races and it is said that she is now nearing that form again On that account we are picking her to be home first in the concluding race on the card Her stiffest opposition should come from KING TUT a most useful racing tool at New Orleans He was just a little short in his first start here but can be ex ¬ pected to show to better advantage today The one time crack KING GORIN II came back to the races this year with a smash ¬ ing win over Traymore and Scoop If that race wasnt a fluke he is going to be a 1 hard one to beat One Best Bet TORCHILLA in Fourth Race
