months in advance Overnight indications are that the Kentucky classic will be staged under ideal conditions and never before runningWith in all the history of the prize has there been more enthusiasm on the eve of the running With seventeen of the best threeyearolds that can be mustered all ready for the word it is probable there will be withdrawals before post time that will reduce the field to twelve starters still in the hope that there may come rain and heavy track the proposed field is of this number And possibly never before has there been a running of the Derby in which the outstanding juvenile champions back came to it fight out as threeyearolds threeyearoldsToo Too often one or the other of the juvenile champions has failed to train for the Derby and there have been years when the big prize was won by a colt that later in the year was unable to and on himself carry prove the champion that such a race should demand A notable instance of that was in the running last year when Gifford A Cochrans Flying Ebony was returned the winner Flying Ebony was a good colt the day he the won Derby but he was pounds from such away a colt as American Flag And there have been other re ¬ newals where by reason of accident or backwardness in training the best threeyearold was not shown in the running Here are the seventeen glorious creatures of the thoroughbred world that v ill strive for the great prize and honor that goes to the winner of the Kentucky Derby with Bubbling Over Pompey Canter and Display the pronounced choices PP Horse CoLSex Pedigree PedigreeNorth Rider Breeder race tomorrow is different It must be agreed that the juvenile championship while it fell to Pompey last year by reason of his Hopeful and Futurity victories did not have an entirely clear title in except earnings for the reason that he never met Bubbling Over They are to meet for the first time tomorrow Then there is Canter which surely belong close to field fieldThese Pompey and he is of the remarkable These are the outstanding colts of the but company Display winner of the Preakness has proven himself Blondin has niinlifv hisniinlifv in fht proven his CPTTIP TOPA anrl if wmilrl nnssihlp more interest than ever before but the accomplishments of many of the starters that will face the barrier tomorrow makes the 1926 renewal so one of more importance than that fore Taking a line through juvenile form it is almost safe to promise that the winner of the many have gone be ¬ Kentucky Derby will through the go racin year barring accident still the champion Here in Louisville the sportsmen have been gathering for more than a week for the big race Every hotel is crowded to Special trains are parked with the visitors from afar and all capacity one can hear is the race Right up to the eleventh hour there is that loyalty to locality that means so much in each renewal The New Yorkers almost to a man are for Pompey Display Blondin or Espino Noth ing can shake their confidence of the Kentuckians in ¬ Bubbling Over and the Marylanders are not disheartened in in the Preakness PreaknessThis the defeat of Canter This is as it should be in the lobbies of the hotels tonight the is race being run in argument Tomorrow night after the winner been crowned it will be run all oyer again arid it will be a bright sporting memory for years to come has Naturally comeNaturally all of the training operations in the various Derby were camps completed before this morning but several of the colts that yvill strive for the big prize tomorrow afternoon were sent along at a moderate pace just to keep them up to condition Bubbling Over the pride of Kentucky was permitted to step threequarters in 113 and he was under restraint all the came out of tliis gallop soundly and eagej to riin further Bagenbaggage a stablemate of Mr Bradleys champion way He eighths in 3G and he showed no illeffects from his journey from Baltimore and his race in the Preakness was galloped tliree FAMOUS KENTUCKY DERBY TODAY Continued from first page Walter J Salmons Preakness winner Display made his first appearance since his arrival from Maryland and in company with J O Keenes Champ de Mars went along for a good smart fiveeighths in 101 25 This was just a breezing exercise for the son of Fair Play but Champ de Mars continued for the full three quarters and when he had to be driven to cover that distance in 115 it did not make his chance for the Derby look particularly bright brightTom Tom Healey who developed Display was present for the work of the Preakness winner and he was thoroughly satisfied with the move As a matter of fact no trainer is more confident of victory than this same Healey HealeyBill Bill Spires brought out William Zieglers Espino and sent him along at a brisk gallop of fiveeighths in 102 35 The son of Negofol is one of the hand ¬ somest thoroughbreds in training and he is ready to run W E Smith who will ride him in the Derby had the mount this morning and after completing the five eighths as reported he was pulled up the threequarters in 115 115Rock Rock Man which is to carry the Sagamore Stable silks had an easy halfmile in 49 as his final He was fitted in Maryland and it is onlv a question of keeping 15m on edge edgeJ J E Griffiths Canter and W R Coes Pompey the respective hopes of Mary ¬ land and New York were under saddle but all that was required of either was a long slow gallop Each has had his speed thoroughly developed and each is ready lor the question questionLight Light Carbine which will race for L B Humphreys was an arrival and he was galloped a half in 50 His race in the Preakness thoroughly fitted him for his hig effort tomorrow tomorrowIt It was not until even later that Fred Hopkins the trainer for H P Whit ¬ ney arrived with Blondin The colt was shipped back to Belmont Park after his good race in the Preakness and he had his trial for the Derby at the big Nassau County track He stood the journey well and seems sure to give a good account of himself
