NO STAKE RACE ON CARD Overnight Handicap Occupies Post of Feature at Belmont Park llartha Washington the Winner in Close CloseFinish Finish With Ethereal Captain Martin MartinAnother Another to Score Narrowly NEW YORK N Y May 2S With no stake race on the program todays feature ut Belmont Park was an overnight handicap of six and a half furlongs over the main course It was won by Walter J Salmons Martha Washington and when Richard T Wilsons Ethereal got up in time to be second it gave Tom Healey the distinction of sending both the winner and the second horse to the post Gifford A Cochrans Little Asbestos was a remarkably close third and J E Griffiths Single Foot was also close up upCool Cool and disagreeable weather continued and for most of the afternoon there were threatening clouds hanging over the course but fortunately no rain fell and it was the usual big crowd that was out lor tne sporu The racing was excellent and it made one forget the discomfort discomfortThe The overnight handicap was called the Domino and seven went to the post Of the starters the Rancocas Stables Nedana was virtually top weight but she met with much interference in the race and after being badly buffeted about she was eased up at the end by Fator to finish last lastThe The start was a good one but Nedana was pinched off as she left the barrier and while Fator quickly drove her up with the leaders she was in close quarters between The Vintner and Titan and it gave her scant racing room while Single Foot running in front on the inside was right with the lead ¬ ers ersThey They were closely bunched on the first turn and there Nedana was shuffled back while The Vintner Titan and Single Foot ran in exceedingly close order while Martha Wishington and Ethereal were further back That was the order until the stretch turn was reached and there Fator decided to try the outside with Nedana but he did not have any better fortune there the leaders also bearing ouL It was there Martha Washing ¬ ton dashed through on the inside and the race was over She had a safe lead an eighth from home but little Haviland was taking no chances and rode her out vigor ¬ ously to the end Ethereal also slipped through on the inside and it was only in the last stride that she headed Little Asbestos one that had made a determined stretch rush Single Foot bore out at the end while The Vintner and Titan tired from their early efforts effortsUP UP IX THK FIXAL STRIDES STRIDESThe The second mile race of the day resulted in a good finish when Captain Martin from the New Jersey Stable just got up in time to beat Thomas Calcinas Hillside with A C Bostwieks Peddler saving third place Callahan rushed Hillside into the lead at the start and once in front rated the colt along at a fast pace He led until the final strides when Captain Martin about as clumsy a horse as there is in training wormed his way through to win right at the end endPeddler Peddler raced forwardly throughout but he was forced to go a bit wide in the stretch to find racing room and at the end he was tiring Coolagh Boy was another which showed speed to the stretch where he tired badly while Tea Ball was always far out of it and his race was far below his real form formJohn John E Maddens Grief rather a well made daughter of Polymclian and Mission Bells was an easy winner of the opening four and a half furlongs dash for juveniles of the plater division Joe Notter saddled the filly that took second place when he sent J Hermanns Herade to the post and the Oak Ridge Stables Menton saved third from Mrs T W OBriens Manwell ManwellLittle Little time was lost at the barrier and the start was a good one McAuliffe had Grief away quickly and she crossed slightly to the inside of the track Herade was not far away as Grief moved into the command and the others were rather closely bunched with Sam Jowl a bit unfortunate and suf ¬ fered some crowding Early in the action it was apparent that Grief was to be winner for she drew away readily and Herade was the only one giving a real semblance of con ¬ tention An eighth out Grief was in hand and well clear while Herade was just as easily second best There was a bit of a battle for the short end of the prize and Menton outgamed the others othersMcAUMFFE McAUMFFE ALL THE WAY enough to cut out the pace and be home win ¬ ner of the second offering at one mile under claiming conditions Mrs R Alexanders St ifim mood to second nlace with Mrs K E Washington WashingtonBeginning Beginning well from an outside position Fields at once took McAuliffe to the front For an Instant Opperman was second but he soon dropped out of it while AVashington In an attempt to move next to the inside upon the rail ran into trouble and he was securely bottled up in there for most of tho running SL John had no excuse and he was srion close after McAuliffe McAuliffeTwice Twice before tho stretch was reached JSarnes moved up with SL John in an effort to take the lead from McAuliffe but each time the Livingston plater drew away read ¬ ily Then in the stretch St John boro out rather badly under a drive and he was doing his best to be second secondKorean Korean saved ground in the stretch and finished full of run As for Washington the manner in which he was bottled up in the run through the back stretch gave him scant racing chance chanceThere There was a disgraceful form reversel in the running of the mile and aii eighth fifth race when J A Coburns Lockerbie was win ¬ ner while J J Murphys Rusovia was badly outrun In previous races Lockerbie had shown poor form while Rusovia has proved himself a decidelly smart distance running plater platerIn In this race Delhi Boy set the pace and lUisovia raced along in second place but lie was not there after the fiveeighths post having quit badly As for Lockerbie she raced along and catching Delhi Boy in the last eighth outstayed him to the finish finishDevastation Devastation showed an improved perform ¬ ance when he landed in third place but it was possible for anything to happen with Rusovia running such a disgraceful race and at the same time Lockerbie improving as she did didBlack Black Agate from the Everglade Stable forcing most of the pace was winner of the four and a half furlongs race for juveniles at the end of the program J O McGovcrns Victrix just saved second place from AValtcr J Salmons Ennui It Is probable that Ennui was best for beginning slowly she closed a big gap and was going better than the two which beat her to the finish
