AUGUST BELMONT MEMORIAL MEMORIALMrs Mrs Belmont Offers Cup Won Wonby by Fenian in 1869 for Trophy Trophyin in Belmont Stakes NEW YORK N Y May 2S Followers of the turf all over the United States will be rejoiced to learn that the name of Belmont which has been famous in connection with racing in this country for more than half a generation is to be perpetuated in connection with the running of the Belmont Stakes one of the greatest of all threeyearold events not only because of its value but for the reason that it has a continuity that safe ¬ guards the breeding industry Named in honor of the father of the late Chairman of The Jockey Club and first raced for at Jerome Park in 1SG7 its perpetuation has been a matter of pride on the part of those who recognized its importance and the deserved honor it conveyed to the memory of a fine type of sportsman The late Major August Belmont considered it a privilege to add a trophy personally to the stake and labored to build it to the pinnacle it now occupies occupiesAnd And now Mrs Eleanor Belmont has offered to still further add to the prestige of the fine old stake by presenting as a challenge cup for the Belmont Stakes tne beautiful old cup that was won by the first August Belmonts Fenian in 1869 when the race was run for at a mile and threequarters The trophy won by Fenian which was ridden by Charlie Miller and carried 110 pounds is of rare beauty and was one of the most cherished possessions of the late Major Belmont One of its distinguishing characteristics is the reproduction on the top of the three great progenitors of the thoroughbred family Ellipse Herod and Matchem whose blood flows in all our best horses of the present day dayThe The gift will be accompanied by a deed of gift and some day next week the transfer will be made by Mrs Belmont to president Joseph E Widener Mr Widener was de ¬ lighted when informed by Mrs Belmont of her intention to make the presentation and announced that the cup will be held as a perpetual challenge cup to be held by the owner of the winner of the Belmont Stakes for a year The Westchester Racing Asso ¬ ciation will give a copy of the trophy to the owner of the winner to be retained as his or her personal property propertyWhile While the noted fixture already holds a warm place in the affections of the public it is safe to say that the fine traditions of the race will be enhanced by the offering of the cup won by Fenian fiftyfive years ago It is such happenings that make racing the fine sport it is and renders it in its best sense the sport of kings kingsThere There was a brave showing of racing trophies on the lawn yesterday what with the Charles Appleton Memorial Cup the Sin ¬ gleton Cup offered for the Coaching Club American Oaks and the Liverpool Grand Na ¬ tional Trophy won by Jack Horner They were much admired by the crowd
