TWO STEEPLECHASE EVENTS Feature Fridays Good Program at Woodbine Park High Court and Ammunition the Victors Tocn Triumphs in Strathcona Plate Chief Race on the Flat TORONTO Ont May 28 The Ontario Jockey Club provided a program which at ¬ tracted the hunt set at the Woodbine track today Two of the seven races were steeple ¬ chases one an open affair the Thickthorn Steeplechase and the other a special race the Tallyho Steeplechase Purses of 2000 were added to both and both were over the twomile course courseThe The Queen City Stables good steeplechaser High Court proved an easy winner of the Thickthorn Steeplechase when he beat Father Tom by a length Veitch had him under restraint at the finish and had he wished his winning margin could have been a big one This too despite the fact that High Court all but fell at the eleventh jump He recovered quickly and before they reached the next obstacle was again in front and drawing away There were five starters and two of them fell Commodore Ingraham at the fourteenth and The Student at the third jump jumpThe The Tallyho was a sporting event The race was given by the club with the inten ¬ tion of encouraging horses of the hunter type and bearing this in mind nominations were made through the committee The conditions stipulated that no horse was to carry less than 150 pounds Ammunition was the win ¬ ner Crawford had the mount and after leading most of the way won easily by a length from Black Fox All but Jane Second finished the course without a mishap There was no betting on this race raceEASY EASY FOR HIGH COURT COURTHigh High Court made his opponents look cheap in the Thickthorn Steeplechase He was ridden by Veitch and set all the pace to win easily by a length from Father Tom Crawford made several desperate attempts to get to the front with Father Tom the second time around but to no avail as Veitch always had something in reserve At the eleventh fence High Court made a bad landing He recovered very quickly and before they reached the next jump he was again in front and from there to the finish he held command Barnabas was a distant third beaten off forty lengths for second place The other two starters Commodore Ingraham and The Student fell the former at the fourteenth fence and the latter at the third fence fenceThe The Seagram Stable gathered in another purse when the twoyearold filly LTpsetta beat Handclasp by a neck in the third race Schaefer rode a confident race on the win ¬ ner Taking the lead soon after the start Upsetta set a fast pace but when Butwell brought Handclasp up rounding the far turn he gave Upsetta a breathing spell Entering the home stretch Upsetta saved ground while Handclasp went a bit wide In the final eighth Upsetta came again and wear ¬ ing Handclasp down got up and beat her by a neck Nalenta was a distant third beaten five lengths for second place placeSCORES SCORES BY IOUH LENGTHS LENGTHSThe The Strathcona Plate brought out the best field of the afternoon and the race resulted in an easy victory for Token Peternel rode1 a confident nice on the son of Pennant Going to the first turn he went wide but on the back stretch he dropped ia behind Digit and trailed the latter until rounding the far turn where he wore the latter down Enter ¬ ing the stretch Token raced into an easy lead and drawing away in the final eighth had a four lengths advantage at the end Digit just lasted long enough to beat Gold ¬ beater by a head for second place The latter came from far back and finished fast fastSmith Smith rode an energetic finish on Fly Hawk and was responsible in a great meas ¬ ure for that colt winning Off well but out ¬ run the first quarter Smith took back oft the pace and waited until entering the home ¬ stretch where he went to the front with a rush and in the final drive oulasted Bobby Jones The latter began none too well and when Claver made his move he went a bit wide The Seagram filly Sanabar was third a length in front of Sunmell then came Eda C The latter began very slowly and was a follower in the early stages When Thomp ¬ son got her going in the stretch she closed with a rush and at the end was going much the fastest fastestButwell Butwell and Gymkhana proved a winning combination in the sixth race Beginning in front Gymkhana carried Talladega along at a rapid pace the pair racing head and head the first half mile with Talladega on the inside close to the rail At the eighth post the latter began to tire and Gymkhana drawing away won by a length Talladega just lasted long enough to stall off Adria who finished with a rush on the outside Leonard G was fifth after being as good as left at the post He closed a big gap and with an even start Avould probably have won wonT T Francis furnished a good thing when Delusive was winner of the seventh nice He was ridden by Mooney was rated off the pace until entering the home stretch where he moved up stoutly and taking tho lead in the final eighth won going away at the end by a couple of lengths from Lisab The latter was a keen factor all the way Moore kept at him and forced the pace to the top of the stretch where he caught and passed Botch His early efforts then began to tell and the finish found him a tiring horse Tiber the favorite was never factor at any stage and followed along with the rear division the entire way wayAnother Another driving finish came with the running of the Gateside Plate which called for threeyearold Canadianbred horses Hillardo was made an oddson favorite and heavily backed When the start came Rose Beauty and Just In Fun were quickest away and this pair raced head and head down the back stretch Passing the half mile post Claver sent Hillardo to the front moving up on the outside and at the top of the stretch it looked like the favorite would win In the final drive he began to tire and Just In Fun igain took the lead and at the end lasted long enough to stall off Catamaran to win by a scant half length The latter ran a good nice after being messed about in the early stages where she dropped out of It When Stott made his move he took the cuit sidc and at the finish was on the ouUM of the winner
