GREAT DAY OF SPORT Wonderful Crowd Royally Enter ¬ tained at Belmont Park Afterglow Scores Sensational Vic ¬ tory in Keene Memorial Steeplechase to Fairmount NEW YORK N T May 29 It was a wonderful day of holiday sport that was furnished for the Saturday entertainment at beautiful Belmont Park and it was a truly wonderful crowd that was out for the occa ¬ sion In fact it was a crowd that the Long Island railroad was utterly unable to handle with comfort With the Keene Memorial for twoyearolds and the Charles L Appleton Steeplechase as the chief features it was natural that a big crowd should be attracted attractedThe The Keene Memorial brought about a great race when Harry Payne Whitneys After ¬ glow under a vigorous ride by McAtee was just up to beat the Rancocas Stables San kari and in the Charles L Appleton Joseph 12 Widener scored his second stake victory of the meeting meetingThe The weather was delightful after the long siege of cold wintery temperature and that was another reason for the tremendous crowd crowdIn In the Keene Memorial after five had been withdrawn it left just five to race This stake had been changed from previous run ¬ nings when it was cut to four and a half furlongs and run over the Widener course rather than the main course courseThe The start was a good one and almost at once Sankari jumped into a good lead and Afterglow was just heading Recreation one of the two that bore the silks of J S Cosden This order was maintained until will inside the last eighth and it seemed certain that Sankari was to be the winner but in that last eighth McAtee roused Afterglow with rare energy and at the same time Sankari showed signs of tiring and swerved slightly Right to the end McAtee drove Afterglow vigorously and his reward was a nose victory Five lengths further back Recreation easily saved third from his stablemate Marylaneler The race was run in 5l75 which equals the record for the new course and it was worth just GC23 to the winner winnerSCOUES SCOUES IN FAST TIME TIMEJoseph Joseph E Wideners Fairmount in the fastest run steeplechase over the short course finishing the two miles in 3 40 captured the Charles L Appleton Memorial Cup Steeplechase Handicap worth G200 and a piece of plate to the winner He was home in front by twenty lengths but his margin of victory was only possible when Marshall Fields Labrador fell two jumps from the finish and Nicholas unseated his rider at the last jump jumpThese These accidents enabled Cherki from the Somerset Stable to race to second place and he beat W A Reads Gasper five lengths for that part of the stake As a mattei of fact Morgan who rode Gasper narrowly missed losing third when he eased his mount before the finish and Autumn Bells would have nipped him in another stride strideIt It was an exciting revival of the stake and its running brought a field of thoroughly firstclass steeplechasers As was expected Nicholas was sent out to make the pace but Dolly Byers was not far away with Fairmount and he was able to keep within striking distance without hurrying the son of Fair Play Then going to the water Cheyne moved up with Labrador and going to the lower end of the field he raced along side of Fairmount and they were a couple of lengths back of Nicholas which was still racing strongly and jumping boldly Continued on eleventh page GREAT DAY OF SPORT Continued from first page The others were lengths back and it had narrowed to a three horse race when the field was reached There Cheyne made his move with Labrador and he headed Nicholas and still Byers waited with Fairmount but not for lone Going to the last back field jump lie called on the AVidener gelding and he went to the leaders readily The pace was exceed ¬ ingly fast for the field but Fairmount car ¬ ried them at such a clip to the eleventh fence next to the last obstacle that Labrador came down with Cheyne But Nicholas was hanging on Avell and Byers continued to send Fairmount along until Hunt was forced to rush Nicholas to the fence at his best pace He hobbled badly and Hunt lost his seat This eliminated the contention and Fair mount was thus home the winner by twenty lengths lengthsCherki Cherki had been racing steadily all the way and he had little trouble in beating Gasper home for second place particularly when Morgan eased up as he saw the place was lost lostThen Then came Autumn Bells Rip Havel and Damask was last of the company These had cut little figure in the running and as said before it was really a threehorse race with two of the contenders failing to finish finishBY BY XARllOW 3IAUGIX 3IAUGIXThe The Select Handicap of n mile apd an eighth produced another real thrill when Max Hirschs Old King James gelding King Solomons Seal under a masterly ride by Albert Johnson won by a narrow margin from Harry Payne Whitneys threeyearold Macaw and the llosedale Stables San ford was third with Banton fourth fourthThe The threeyearolds in this race were asked to give both King Solomons Seal and Sanfprd considerable weight and it could not be done as far as King Solomons Seal was concerned That old fellow has been training with Sara zcn and he had been brought back to his best form formMacaw Macaw was the one to force all the run ¬ ning Banton raced in second place and High Star and Sanford followed while Blon din the stablemate to Macaw and King Solomons Seal brought up the rear rearThis This was the order to the stretch but John son had timed his run to a nicety and swing ¬ ing King Solomons Seal to the outside he icharged on the leaders He wax still lengths away an eighth from home but Johnson kept him right at It and in the last stride lie nodded down in front of Macaw MacawThere There Avas some delay in making the finish official a claim of foul having been lodged but tho stewards rightly could see nothing to bring a bout disturbing the order of the finish finishThere There came a double for Joseph K Videner and a double for that sterling sire Fair Play when Be Fair was winner of the four and a half furlongs through the AVidencr Course that was the fifth offering In this there came such a close finish that many dis ¬ agreed Avith the placing judges Avhen Be Fair the Goodestone Stables Pillotta and the the Rancocas Stables Tipstaff finished in a close bunch Many wore of the opinion that Pillotta was the winner winnerIt It was a good start and in the middle dis ¬ tance Sande found his way into command with Be Fair and he opened up a slight lead but Pillotta was close after him and Tipstaff Avas also racing strongly while Byrd the Harry Payne AVhitney starter was going strongly but in close quarters All throiigb the final eighth it was a desperate fight and Pillotta Avas closing resolutely but it ap ¬ pears that Be Fair lasted to be the winner though it could only have been by an Inch Tipstaff Avas also running over horses at the end endWhen When Whiskalong was winner of the seven eighths dash at the end of the card it com ¬ pleted a double for both Harry Payne Whit ¬ ney and jockey McAtee Afterglow having taken the Keene Memorial MemorialIn In this race the rejuvenated son of Wliisk Broom II led home Bud Fishers Cartoonist while Flyman from the Brookmeade Stable just nosed out J K Wideners 1rofiteer for third Sixteen cheap ones to race a mile was the first offering and it resulted in a real thrill yhen Brush By froin the Sagamore Stable just lasted to nose out F J Kearns Kspinol with P H Faulconers kittle Dave stving third thirdFrom From a good start Brush By was rushed into a long lead and it stood him in gpod stead Little Dave was racing along in second place and the others AVere in fairly close order with Kspinol racing forwardly but in close quarters quartersIt It was on the stretch turn that McAnlliffe went to the outside with Kspinol to find racing room and it cost him some ground But in the meantime Brush Ify was begin ¬ ning to tire and the Kearns plater closed on him Avith every stride but was just one short of victory Little JDavo had tired chasing the winner but had enough left to beat Palmfst and it was Caficlysm tliat was fifth
