TORCHILLA LUCKILY First in the Bashford Manor Stakes by a Nose General Haldeman Second and andJock Jock Third Decision in Doubt DoubtUntil Until Official Placing LOUISVILLE Ky May 20 Col W E Applegate local turfman took down 57740 as the winners share of the twentyfifth renewal of the Bashford Manor Stakes the feature event of the last Saturdays racing at Churchill Downs this afternoon when Torchilla was winner and lucky to triumph as the margin was only a nose while Gen ¬ eral Haldeman was second a nose back and Jock third the same distance farther away It was one of the prettiest finishes seen this year on the Kentucky circuit and the winner was in doubt until the official placing was hung out outThe The vast crowd was given a great thrill when the three horses passed the judges in such close alignment that only the official placing could separate them A mighty shout went up when Torchillas number was posted as the winner but it was by the narrowest of margins and with better racing luck General Haldeman would have won wonThe The final Saturday brought out an excellent crowd and the fields were well matched A fast track prevailed due to the hard work of Superintendent Tom Young who made a special trip back here from Chicago to look after conditions for the final two days of the meeting The weather was exceedingly warm warmPanic Panic which won at long odds early in the meeting duplicated that performance when under the skillful guidance of jockey M Skyrm lie won the fourth race the Wat kins Hptel Purse Miss Nell Watkins made owner Fred Musante the present of a hand ¬ some bouquet of American beauty roses after the finish Moms Boy was second and Mount Beacon third thirdCLOISTER CLOISTER BY A XOSE XOSECloister Cloister coming through the stretch with a fine burst of speed got up just in time to beat Parole II by a nose in tho last roe Dry Moon the early pacemaker lasting for the short end of the puVse puVseOmnia Omnia racing in the interest of E B Elkins trained by former jockey Jack Hanover and cleverly ridden by jockey II Finnerty won the first race by a narrow margin from Ice with Alpine third The latter showed the most early speed but tired when the final test came Ice was hard ridden through the stretch but the winner was too good for him Alpine was hustled to the front by jockey Xeal but tired badly in the last threesix ¬ teenths of a mile mileJockey Jockey W Garner piloted Dr Maxon bear ¬ ing the silks of F M Grabner to victory in the second race with Marshal Xey second and Step In third The latter was coupled with the winner in the wagering When the real test came Dr Maxon proved the gamer and withstood Marshall Neys challenge The Code displayed a bit of early speed but quit when the real running began Capuchin also tired tiredWm Wm F Poison finally came into his own with Prudy in the third race Jockey R Finnerty who was astride Omnia also rode this winner He sent her on her way in the final threeeighths of a mile and at the end had Up She Goes held safe Lady Inez got the short end of it Eight made the contest here and they raced over the distance of one and a sixteenth miles Frederick Raphael quit badly in the final drive
