FINALE AT WOODBINE Ontario Spring Meeting Ends in Blaze of Glory Attack Wins William Hendrie HendrieMemorial Memorial Punjab Accounts Accountsfor for Woodstock Plate TORONTO Ont May 20 The Ontario Jockey Club spring meeting wound up in the proverbial blaze of glory An immense gath ¬ ering turned out at the Woodbine to wit ¬ ness an excellent program run off Three of the seven races were stakes the Aintree Steeplechase the William Hendrie Memorial and the Woodstock Plate Five thousand dollars was added to each of these events All of these stakes are old fixtures at the Woodbine Todays running marked the fortieth of the Aintree Chase the sev ¬ enteenth for the William Hendrie Memorial and the fortieth of the AVoodstock Plate PlateThe The William Hendrie Memorial the con ¬ ditions of which calls for horses foaled in Canada brought out the largest field of the three Kings Court and Duchess coupled as the Seagram entry were the favorites but proved a disappointment The winner was Attack which finished second in the Kings 3 Mate on the opening day Off well and in close pursuit of the pace from the start Attack responded gamely under punishment and beat Clitoris by a neck in a driving finish Fatal Dart was third another head siway It was a tough race for the Livings ton stable to lose At the post Fatal Dart was kicked first by Brevet and then by Manila and going to the first turn was shuf ¬ fled back and apparently out of it Hounding the far turn Fatal Dart moved up stoutly next to the inside rail but for some reason Thompson took his mount to the extreme outside of his rivals entering the home stretch losing several lengths by this move When straightened out for the final run Fatal Dart closed with a great burst of speed but he just failed to make it and was l eateii by a heck and a head in a race that lie should have won easily The winners portion of the stakes was 4050 4050CAKA1HNIKK CAKA1HNIKK IMPJIESSIVELY IMPJIESSIVELYSpocs Spocs Crawford and Carabinier have proven a hard combination to beat here this spring The Sexvickley Stables juniper added the JiOOO added Aintree Steeplechase Handi ¬ cap to the list of victories he scored at the Woodbine when he beat Cun Boat by a head in a driving finish Crawford rated Cara bmier off the pace but kept closer up than usual in the early stages and when he called on the latter he responded with a splendid effort that landed him in front in the final strides Another star which ran coupled with Carabinicr raced into a long lead at the first turn of the field with Peccant closest in pursuit When this pair had enough the other three moved up and they raced in close order Going to the eleventh jump Lieu ¬ tenant Seas after making his effort began to tire and he dropped out of contention in the last quarter Gun Boat was in front going to the last fence but from there home lie weakened weakenedThe The Walter T Salmon stable scored its first victory at the meeting when Punjab won the Woodstock Plate He was ridden by Maiben was rated under restraint the first half and rounding the far turn gradu ¬ ally worked his way up Entering the home stretch he closed with a rush and shaking off his opponents in the final eighth won going away at the end by a length and a half from South Wind The latter just got up in time to beat the tiring Gaffsman by a head for second place Hot Pepper was ridden with mighty poor judgment Imme ¬ diately the barrier was sprung Mooney began on Hot Pepper and whipping him up to the front rounding the first turn sent him into a two lengths lead He never gave the horse a breather and naturally he quit under these sort of tactics and at the finish was last and beaten off twenty lengths lengthsSir Sir Barley showed a good performance in ti Patricia Plate He was ridden by Mc Crossen came from last place in the stretch to get up in the last twenty yards to win going away Theresa Joan and Heartache quickest to begin went to the front when tho start under punishment from the top of the stretch He beat Subtle by half t length for second place Then came Glance a neck away He began very slowly and closed an immense gap finishing fast in the middle of the track trackContract Contract under a rousing finish by Pete Walls proved best of the band of platers that went to the post in the first race He was well backed and won in handsome fash ¬ ion after standing a long hard stretch drive At the end he had an advantage of half a l Migth over Leger which in turn beat Can ¬ ister by the same distance for second money Tamarind started out like a winner outrun ¬ ning his rivals from the start and drawing away into a length lead before they had gone an eighth The Seagram racer held command until just past the eighth post where he began to tire and dropped out of the picture Taud lane would have been a dangerous factor had he been able to come through on the in ¬ side at the top of the home stretch where he was blocked Norseland scored another victory for the Neiisteter stable when she won the seventh race She picked up six pounds off her last jjtcc and was ridden with good judgment by Munden The marc was not hurried in the early stages and followed her rivals the first half mile Bounding the far turn she moved up on the extreme outside and in the stretch run close with a rush to win going away at the end by a length Krica and Muskallonge the early pactmaker fought it out all the last quaier and finished as named noses apart
