AUSPICIOUS START Thorncliffe Meeting Begins With Big Gathering on Hand Inaugural Attraction Provides Thrilling Contest With Lieuten ¬ ant n the Victor TORONTO Ont May 31 Thorncliffe opened to a tremendous gathering this after ¬ noon It was the first spring meeting of the club held under the auspices of the Canadian Racing Associations and the club ¬ house clement was particularly strong The plant was in splendid condition and for the first time this spring weather conditions were ideal for outdoor sport and topcoats were a burden rather than a comfort comfortSecretary Secretary McLennan furnished a splendid program for the occasion with the Thorncliffe Handicap 2500 added at a mile and a sixteenth the attraction The race resulted in a rousing finish in which Lieutenant II just histed long enough to beat Token by the smallest of margins Dr OMara was third another head away It was one of the best finishes ever witnessed at Thorn ¬ cliffe When the start came Lieutenant II off well outran his rivals to the first turn and Smith then took him under slight re ¬ straint Goldbeater was a trailer and unable to keep up In the stretch run the field was bunched up and at the end Dr OMara closed with a rush rushFavorites Favorites won the first three races and two of the afternoons winners were from the J K I Ross stable One of them the twoyearold Landlord equalled the track record for fiveeighths when he ran the distance in 100 100IIILLAUDO IIILLAUDO IN ROMP ROMPThe The J 1C L Ross stable had the honor of furnishing the first winner of the meet ¬ ing when Hillardo won in a romp Munden kept him in hand the first half mile and when he made his effort rounding the far turn Hillardo dashed to the front and in the stretch run drew away into a long lead At the finish he was half a dozen lengths in front of Royal Pearl and cantering He left the post pulling up and whatever chance this gelding may have had was ruined right there In the run through the home stretch Royal Pearl wore down the tiring Doc Gaiety to beat him by four lengths for second place The latter showed keen speed in the early stages but evidently was not up to a race for he tired badly when the winner chal ¬ lenged lengedThe The Neusteter stable which has been in great form here this spring scored another victory when Robert Maxwell beat Aversion by a length in the second race The winner was ridden by Schaefer and after being rated off the pace to the stretch turn slipped through next the rail and in the stretch nm drew away Aversion a first time starter since lastfall ran a smashing good race Off well she was sent into the lead and for half a inile she carried the speedy Vacation Time off her feet This effort told and when the winner challenged Aversion tired She was probably not up to a real hard race St Valentine dropped out of it at thfi turn out of the back stretch closed with a rush and was running over the leaders at the finish finishWALLS WALLS ROUSING FINISH FINISHP P Walls put up a rousing finish on Land ¬ lord in the third race and he landed the Ross nicer in front in the final strides Sun Jynn started out to make a runaway of the race Taking the lead after passing the halfmile post Sun Lynn drew away into an easy lead rounding tne far turn Walls was working on Landlord and at the top of the stretch he sent his mount to the pace ¬ maker The pair hooked tip at the eighth post and a terrific drive ensued which lasted to the end Ixindlord finished fuh of cour ¬ age and it was only in the final strides that he managed to stick his head in front of the tiring Sun Lynn Tamiami Trail a keen factor from the start furnished a lot of contention until the last sixteenth when he began to tire Willie K was outrun from the start and was never dangerous at any stage stageMartingale Martingale made a runaway of the sixth race Mooney rushed him to the front in the run to the first turn and hugging the rail he drew away on the back stretch Flying Cloud was following the leader and under slight restraint Rounding the far turn the latter moved up and at the top of the stretch it looked as if he had the lead The iKiir bore out a bit here but when straightened out again Martingale drew away and at the finish he had an advantage of a length and a half Flying Cloud beat the favorite Pixola by six lengths for second place and the others were pretty well strung out outAbel Abel put up a rousing finish on McTinkle Jn tho fourth race and after a long hard stretch drive just lasted long enough to beat the favorite Adria by a head McTinkle began fast and in the early stages raced Alletocho into defeat At the top of the stretch he went to the front and cut across to the inside rail At the end he was tiring Adria the favorite began slowly and fol ¬ lowed her opponent the first quarter Round Ing the far turn she moved up and entering the home stretch wis guided very wide At the end she finished with great speed and would have won in another stride or two Alletache was third beaten by a couple of lengths for second place Peter Whiffle was never a factor in any stage and was beaten off at the end endr Dernier Sou under a good ride was winner r of the seventh race He was ridden by Mun ¬ den and in the run to the first turn was shuffled back Munden took him to the out ¬ side on the hack stretch and gradually im ¬ proved his position Entering the home filretch he charged on the leader and in the final drive took command to win going away liy half a length Scissors was quickest to begin and made all of the pace but tired ifter going threequarters At the finish he beat Blow Horn a couple Of lengths for second place placeK K J Morrow got in this morning with eight horses he had been racing at Jamaica and Belmont Park There were eight in his lot and they will join the six he had there The horses were shipped direct to the Long Branch track Flag of Truce and Note Love arc among those in this stable
