AURORAS BANNER DAY Attendance of 20000 Gathers at atExposition Exposition Park Cross Bow Provides Big Surprise in Accounting for the Mem ¬ orial Handicap AURORA III May 31 The popularity of racing in Illinois was strikingly illustrated here today when a crowd estimated at about twenty thousand filled every available space in the large and commodious Exposition Park to witness the running of the Decoration Day program of which the 3500 Memorial Han ¬ dicap was the feature featureThe The crowd came early and while the ma ¬ jority was from Chicago there were also delegations from Elgin Joliet Geneva and other towns within a radius of a hundred miles milesThe The extensive parking enclosure was a solid mass of automobiles and the grand ¬ stand was comfortably filled after the ar rival of the first special train of fifteen cars from Chicago The overflow finally secured a point of vantage in the infield infieldThe The two additional trains which followed were also crowded to the limit The Aurora Elgin electric line was forced to put on many additional cars in an effort to accom ¬ modate the many Chicagoans who wished to see the racing ADout race time the weather was threatening and a few drops of rain fell but the track was in excellent condition conditionA A A Baronis Cross Bow after a brilliant performance was winner of the Memorial Day Handicap feature attraction of the excellent holiday program Moshier and Walters Max Brick raced to second place while J B McGinns Pegasus led Sir Leonid homo for third place The race was worth 3140 net to the winner winnerLEADS LEADS ALL THE WAT WATJockey Jockey D Smith sent Cross Bow into the lead at once was never headed and won in clever fashion by a comfortable margin Bolton Max Brick and Pegasus raced in closest pursuit of the winner until the far turn was reached when Bolton retired Max Brick continued gamely to his task as the stretch was reached as did Pegasus but this order was unchanged during the run home and a length separated the pair at the finish for the minor portions of the prize Sir Leonid finished with a wonderful burst of speed during the last quarter to earn the 100 that went to the fourth horse horseTaking Taking command at once Rocket showed the most speed at all stages in the initial race At no stage was he in serious trouble Pol Roger raced up into a contending posi ¬ tion after rounding the far turn and easily disposed of Meddling Seth for second in the last sixteenth Meddling Seth followed in closest pursuit of the winner until well into the stretch but tired during the last sixteenth sixteenthFOLKS FOLKS IXITIAL SUCCESS SUCCESSStuart Stuart Polk scored his initial success of the meeting when Xorcross accounted for the second race Brown Betty McCrimmon and Karachi displayed the most early speed alternating in the lead until midway of the stretch Norcross was not far away and gradually improving his position during the last quarter was up in the closing strides to outgatne Ivarachi McCrimmon in turn was tiring rapidly near the end but outlasted Brown Betty for third place placeOne One of the most exciting finishes of the meeting came with the running of the two yearold nice the third on the program in which The Wire Sol arid Miss Fountain flashed past the judges in a bunch in the order named namedSol Sol showed the way setting a fast pace with The Wire in closest pursuit Miss Fountain and Mayberry were following close ¬ ly lapped to the stretch and engaged in a bumping match while rounding the turn for home When the final test came The Wire gradually wore down Sol and Miss Fountain was going fastest of the trio on the outside at the end endAfter After showing the way by a comfortable margin practically throughout T H Bern Jiardts Rumbling eventually scored a handy victory in the Wheaton Purse secondary feature after racing extremely wide during the stretch run Agnes Call held the others Safe throughout Pure Dee had little diffi ¬ culty in disposing of Body Guard during the stretch test after Maclean had retired from the struggle struggleFollowing Following the running of the big race A A Baroni owner of Cross Bow was
