BRAZEN TO THE FORE Accounts for Sugar Grove Purse at Exposition Park Cuban Flag by Narrow Margin Scotland Forever Lasts After AfterKeen 1 Keen Stretch Struggle AURORA III June 10 G H Neals Bra ¬ zen found the mile route more to his liking and accounted for the Sugar Grove Purse the fifth and principal attraction at Exposition Park course this afternoon E P Summer fields Sir Leonid and Johnny Jewell from the Glencoe Stable divided the minor por ¬ tions of the purse Bolton was following and Deep Thought brought up the rear Car ¬ toon after warming up for the race came to the paddock lame and was excused which robbed the race of some of its interest interestJohnny Johnny Jewell Deep Thought and Bolton was the order until the field had rounded the far turn At this point Brazen moved up on the outside Continuing gamely he collared Johnny Jewell midway cf the stretch md drew away to win by two lengths Jockey AV Taylor took no chances and rode his mount out to the end Sir Leonid also came from the rear and disposed of Johnny Jewell the tiring pacemaker rather handily for second place Bolton and Deep Thought both tired in the last quarter quarterRain Rain threatened during the greater part of the afternoon but failed to materialize materializeThe The track was in fine condition and the attendance good despite the unfavorable weather outlook about race times timesFIRST FIRST SUCCESS OF YEAR YEARWhen When Countess Claridge showed the way throughout the running of the initial race it marked her first success of the year Jockey Kehrt was taking it a trifle easy approaching the finish and had to shake his mount up near the end to retain a length advantage Smooth Ice raced forwardly for the entire way and held second place safe all through the stretch C T Worthington made a resolute bid in the run home easily disposing of the others but could never get to the leaders leadersAlthough Although he took command at once and was never headed Cuban Flag only got home by a narrow margin in front of Dad Wilson in the second race which marked his maiden victory Cuban Flag bore out all through the last sixteenth carrying Dad Wilson with him but for which the latter iiiight have won Saving ground all the way Eila Lee II held the others safe during the stretch run Jockey Dominick broke a stirrup iron during the running of the race which also contributed to the defeat of Dad DadWilson Wilson It was only after a keen stretch struggle that Scotland Forever lasted to earn the verdict in the third race Scotland Forever wrested the lead from Vasquez a sixteenth of a mile from the finish but driving to the limit to stall off Desert Gold The latter closed with a brilliant rush after being forced forcedito ito work his way up on the outside and going extremely wide while rounding the stretch turn Visquez the pacemaker saved third from Klaxon which began in a tangle and closed a wide gap gapGREEN GREEN HILLS NARROWLY NARROWLYHigh High Card cut out the running to the stretch in the fourth race with Gilmore and Green Hills in close pursuit An eighth out Aristotle challenged and High Card dropped out of contention During the closing stages stagesGreen Green Hills responded gamely to urging and earned the decision by a narrow margin from the game finishing Aristotle Caroline was a bang up third after closing much ground Gilmore found the route a trifle too far and tired after racing well until the last sixteenth sixteenthWhiff Whiff never left the result in serious doubt during the running of the sixth race and after cutting out all her own pace drew away decisively near the end Irish Pat came again in the stretch and outstayed Demijohn for second place placeAfter After being outpaced by Bonnie Lizzie and Arragosa until reaching the stretch in the concluding race Crosswise gradually im ¬ proved his position and in the final drive bested Bobbie Shea The latter also made a game bid in the final eighth but tired in the last few yards Arragosa outlasted the tir ¬ ing pacemaker Bonnie Lizzie for the short end of the purse
