BEAU OF THE WEST FAILS Disappoints Many Admirers in the Oakville Handicap I oc Gaiety and Thornton Finish in Front Frontof of Him In the Order Xanied Fhanariot Easily HAMILTON OnL Canada June 10 Racing devotees were handed a severe shock shockwhen when the Seagram Stables Beau of the West Westwas was beaten in the running of the Oakville Handicap which featured the card at the Hamilton Jockey Club course here this after ¬ noon Beau of the West was installed a pro ¬ hibitive favorite by an excellent crowd of racing enthusiasts but the best that he could do was to finish third Doc Gaiety racing in the colors of Mrs 13 Glassco of Windsor OnL took the lions share of the purse after dominating the running from the start and was two lengths in front of Thornton another rank outsider Beau of the West was rid denly timidly by Erickson he taking him up at the first turn and letting him drop back and appeared to be hopelessly out of the run ¬ ning In the final half mile he made up a world of ground and with better riding would no doubt have proven his superiority over those that competed with him Manila and Brevet were the remaining starters startersTrack Track conditions were of the best here today and weather that could hardly have been improved upon uponTho Tho Seagram Stable of Waterloo furnished the winner of the fourth race another three quarters sprint in which Phanariot success ¬ fully carried its colors to an easy victory in the days secondary feature Bourassa had tho mount on the Seagram starter and lie followed tho fast pace cut out by W J Salmons Sport Royal for the first half mile When asked for his best speed he moved to Sport Royal in determined fashion and col ¬ lared him just as the eighth post was reached From there to the finish it was just a matter matterof of how far he would win by At the end he was three lengths in front of Powder which finished with good speed to taJte second place from tho fast tiring leader which just man ¬ aged to stagger in a head in front of W S Kilmers Alletache the latter was accorded stout support supportOPENER OPENER TO WAR GOLD GOLDWar GOLDi i War Gold made a runaway of the opening contest a fiveeighths dash for twoyearolds winning with ease after making the pace from the start and racing away from his rivals when straightened out in the home stretch to be winner by four lengths Arle sian installed the choice saved second place from W J Salmons War Dress which was coupled in the wagering with Matador The remainder of the field was more or less strung out The winner was sadly neglected In the wagering and returned a big amount amountfor for his admirers Hanky Rice after following his opponents for fiveeighths of the second race a three threetiuarlcrs tiuarlcrs dash came with a belated burst of speed through the stretch and in a hard fought finish gained a neck verdict over C F Clarks Senate which raced in a prominent position from the start and held on desper ¬ ately to save second place from Button ButtonJright Jright which finished in determined fashion next to the inner rail in the stretch run runjust just failing to overhaul the placed horse Thco Fay showed the way for the greater part of tiie journey and looked all over a winner but quit in the final eighth and was unplaced at the finish Gallant Greek also alsosuccumbed succumbed to the rush of the first three Paul Ciceri supplied the winner of tho third thirdrace race at the mile and one sixteenth route in inwhich which there were seven starters Munden sent Real Artist into the lead going to the first turn and then took a snug hold of his hismount mount reserving his speed for the final ef ¬ fort It was well that he did as Links which had been trailing his rivals from the outset closed with his usual determination through the stretch and just failed to catch the judges eye Links had a substantial margin marginover over Haiti which laid close to the pace from the start only to shorten his stride in the stretch Just was fourth beateii a half length lengthLemnos Lemnos carrying the pink and blue colors of the W J Salmon stable the New York sportsman was winner of the sixth race when he scored by a half length from Muskallonge with Play On gathering in the third portion of the purse
