1 MEADOWBROOK HANDICAP Barleycorn the Winner After a Gamely Fought Contest Widener Jumper Outlasts Minata in One of ofthe the Host Steeplechases Witnessed WitnessedThis This Year Large Fields NEW YORK N Y June 10 Joseph E Wideners Barleycorn in as gamely a fought steeplechase as has been seen in many a day was winner of the two and a half miles of the Meadowbrook Handicap at Belmont Park It was the Thursday feature and Mrs F Ambrose Clarks Mtnata was the one to give the Widener chaser such a stiff argument For the last seveneighths of the long trying course the horses were well lapped and at the end Barleycorn was winner by half a length lengthRavel Ravel from Thomas Hitchcocks Broad Hollow Stable was third and the only other starter was Damask from the Greentree Stable But it was really a twohorse race virtually all the way The prize was worth just 2775 to the winner Before the racing began there were several squalls of wind and not a few showers that drove those from the lawn to shelter but later the day cleared and conditions were delightful mor most of the afternoon afternoonThe The program was remarkable for the size of the fields that were engaged in some of the races and apart from the Meadowbrook and a handicap of a mile and an eighth the card was rather ordinary Before the run ¬ ning of the Meadowbrook it was generally agreed that Barleycorn was best of the starters but the fact that it was over the two and a half miles course was to the ad ¬ vantage of Minata while there was a tip abroad on Damask that suggested he would run an improved race raceFrom From the drop of the flag Dolly Byers took Barleycorn into the lead and he never surrendered the command until in the final stages when he and Minata were fighting along and first one and then the other showed in front Damask was particularly rank in the early stages and Ferguson had no end of trouble trying to take him back Revel raced smoothly and for a turn of the course all four jumped well wellIt It was not until the back field was reached that Minata made a real charge on Barley ¬ corn and as Smoot brought him alongside Byers took up Barleycorn to hold his lead Minata outjumped the Widener gelding at the first fence in the back field and for an in ¬ stant he enjoyed a lead but Barleycorn was right after him and they were lapped again at the next fence Then began a stern battle that continued all the way to the finish Byers was riding with rare skill and he led Smoot over the last fence but Barleycorn had jumped in rather badly and he had to be straightened and ridden vigorously to make the score certain Da ¬ mask after all his early rankness was not there when asked to run and Ravel beat him readily for third Continued on sixteenth page MEADOWBROOK HANDICAP Continued from first page The mile and an eighth handicap was seq ond in importance on the program and it resulted in something of a surprise when Johnny Callahan rode J S Cosdens Cloud land to a well earned victory over the Chil howee Stables Chilhowee and Max Hirschs King Solomons Seal closed an immense gap to beat Golden Spire for third thirdFrom I From a good start Chilhowee was jumped I into the lead and Mirador and Cloudland went after him with Flagship in fourth place and Golden Spire and King Solomons Seal were far back of the pace King Solomons Seal was a bad last and all through the back stretch he did not make up an inch of ground groundilirador ilirador was first of the leaders to show signs of tiring and as he dropped back Chil ¬ howee drew out slightly but Callahan had Cloudland racing strongly back of him King Solomons Seal was beginning to pick up his company but he was still far back of the pace Sharp saved ground on the stretch turns and he still had Chilhowee in a good lead but Cloudland was responding to the call of Callahan and stride by stride he wore the fiveyearold dovn to pass him in the closing strides King Solomons Seal was coming with a mi fc rush at the end but it was only good enrojfc to land him in third place placeFourteen Fourteen cheap ones made up the field for the opening mile and W Tt Midgeley s old Dream of the Valley by a rush through the stretch was up in time to beat home John AVhalens Papa Blinks and Kiyi from the Lilane Stable saved third from the Everglade Stables Indian Trail TrailIndian Indian Trail Kiyi and Papa Blinks were the ones to force most of the pace Before the stretch was reached Papa Blinks saving ground all the way went into command and looked all over a winner But in the mean ¬ time Dream of the Valley had been weaving his way through He was exceedingly lucky to find openings and at the last eighth post was second to jthe Whalen plater In a rattling finish he was up to score going away Indian Trail was tiring badly at the end to be beaten by Kiyi for third thirdThe The third offering was a four and a half furlongs dash over the Widener Course for maiden juveniles It brought out some nice ones and a particularly nice one was winner when W n Coes Donnez Moi led the field home Gun Royal from the Newtondale Stable took second place with M E John ¬ stons Mirafel a brother to Sarazen was wasj j third Twentyone maiden threeyearolds raced over threequarters of the Widener Course in the fifth and Helvetia from James Cox Bradys Hamilton Farm Stable proved best when she led home the Log Cabin Stud Stables Judicial and Walter J Salmons Briar Broom was third thirdj j Black Agate from the Everglade Stable practically won all the way in a fiveeighths dash for plater juveniles at the end of the card Walter J Salmons Ennui raced to second place and third was the portion of ofI I A C Bostwicks Medius
