BUSY SCENES AT H0MEW00D ♦ Big Force of Men Rushing Construction Work to Completion. Horses Arriving at Course — Many Visitors Sunday — Meal Location and Transportation. 9 — "Homewood will be reaely fe r racing Sat-urelay, July ; ." This positive announcement was made by the constructing engineer of the New Washington Park race course under construction near the town of Homewood, twenty-six miles south of Chicago. "The American Derby will be run Saturday, July 10, one week after the inaugural," stated the management of the Illinois Jockey Club, which will conduct the racing at the new track. There was no let-up in construction Sunday. Cnder a blazing June sun, scenes of activity met the eye at every turn. Derricks were lifting steel into place, carpenters were whanging away at uncompleted stables. Teams were busily engageel in various parts of the ground, some plowing up the infielel. whiie others were leveling lawns anel grading whatever high spots remaincel. The track itself is finished, has been for months past. It presenteel a pleasing sight to riiose entering by the main gate off Rallied Street. Beautiful blae-k loam, harrowed to the consistency of sanel. is the work of "Biily" Myer, track superintendent. Banked to : safe grade on the turns, it is enclosed by fene-es painteel white and with the furlong pests in place and painted various e-olors. Insofm as the trae-k itself is eoneerncd, ri?ing ercild be conducted today or tomorrow. It is complete elown to the last eletail and is available for training purposes. It is a physical impossibility to e-omplete the entire plant elown to the minor details by opening elay. It can be made reaely, however, artl eompleteel to the stage required for racing. Details will have to wait. Sufficient stables to house TIG horses will be reaely before July 3 anel plans call for the eomple-tion thereafter of one forty-six stable barn daily, e r until 1,500 horses can be ae-eom-moelated. Some of the eompleteel Stables are already oecupied anel big shipments were expected Monday and Tuesday. Among the horses on the ground were those of Ike Weil and Barney Herman, Chie-ago owners, and the string of the Missouri Stable, iuclutling Mercutio, a frequent winner at Aurora. Coutinued on twentieth page. BUSY SCENES AT H0MEW00D Continued from first pajre Secretary and General Manager Thos. P.ourke was busily engaged in the general offices, while C. W. Hay. who will preside in i the stewards stand, made a flying trip from I Collinsville, where he is engaged at present, | to complete plans for the actual racing here. Sunday, in response to the managements imitation to inspect the plant, hundreds of cars made the trip from Chicago, while on the grounds were numerous cars e-arrying the license plates of other states, among them being noted California and Florida licenses. The New Washington Park is located in an ideal spot, probably unequaled from the standpoint of transportation facilities in the vicinity of Chicago. Served by the new electrified suburban service of the Illinois Central railroad, which runs directly in the rear of the grandstand and by the Southern Traction Company, whose rails parallel the eastern fence and run dlreoaty in front of the main entrance on Halsted Street, and by the I southern automobile gateway to Chicago, the Dixie Highway, with its radiating roads, including Halsted Street, it is easy of access from Chicago and adjacent towns. . .*
