WALKOVER FOR MILLWICK Gordon Plaid Takes the Bouquet Claiming Stakes From Bookie Twelve Scratches in ThreeQuarters Mile MileHandicap Handicap Allows C A Mills Racer to toWalk Walk Around Course for Fnrsc NEW YORK N Y May 24 Mrs George Reads Gordon Plaid splashed his way to vic ¬ tory in the four and onehalf furlongs Bou ¬ quet Claiming Stakes at Belmont Park to ¬ day thereby adding 4425 to his score The race was the feature of the Westchester Rac ¬ ing Associations Belmont Park card but the day was more noteworthy because of the fact that the miserable weather brought about a walkover when all the trainers with the exception of Kimball Patterson withdrew their charges in the threequarter mile handi ¬ cap under high weights Patterson saddled Millwick for C A Mills and he walked over for the purse purseOf Of all the miserable days that have oc ¬ curred since the opening of the New York season this one was about the worst for in addition to the rain there was a wintry wind blowing over the big course that made the place about as uncomfortable as could be imagined imaginedThere There were eight starters in the Bouquet Claiming Stakes and it was W R Coes Bookie that followed Gordon Plaid home while C L Carrolls Our Adele just got up in time to save third place from Polls the starter from R L Gerrys Aknusti Stable StableBookie Bookie was the one to set the pace but Gordon Plaid steadily improved his position and in the last eighth he easily raced past the son of Polymelian to be a winner by a length and a half Our Adele finished with a rush and she was just a nose back of the tiring Bookie BookieThe The walkover was tremendously unpopular with the crowd and there were cat calls and hoots when Milliwick appeared on the track for his gallop over the Widener course There seemed to be small excuses for the race re ¬ sulting in a walkover and it was only made possible by the absence of an adequate scratch rule at New York courses coursesL L Strubes Cannae greatly benefited by the deep going was an easy winner of the opening race at a mile and a sixteenth which was framed for platers Prom a carded field of thirteen it was reduced to five starters before post time and Revolver racing for the first time under the silks of Continued on twentieth page WALKOVER FOR MILLWICK Continued from first page Mrs Louise Viau finished second with Jef ¬ ferson Livingstons Junetta saving third from Edward Arlingtons Grand Bey The other starter was Ragweed and she was beaten off offThere There was a Joseph E Widener victory in the dash for threeyearold fillies when Fair ¬ ness the daughter of Hourless and Fair Priscilla galloped home in front of three others Clinto H Millers Flora M was an easy second with Clamor from the Sage Stables saving third from Be Fair another Widener starter starterThere There was no delay at the post and Fair ¬ ness showing an abundance of speed in the difficult going forced the pace from the rise of the barrier She quickly raced Clamor into defeat and going into a long lead only can ¬ tered in front for the remainder of the way Going wayGoing into the stretch turn Flora M saved ground and she readily disposed of Clamor for second place while Be Fair was at no time a contender and through the stretch when she was soundly beaten she was eased up by Sande SandeEight Eight juvenile fillies started in the four and a half furlongs Pretty Polly Purse which was the fifth race and it proved easy for Princess Tina from the Audley Farm Stable At the time of the running there was a half a gale blowing down the Widener course and as a result in spite of the deep going the daughter of Spanish Prince II raced the distance in the fast time of 52 Swizzlestick from the Wheatley Stable after racing forwardly all the way saved second place from Samuel Ross Flower Girl while All Callao from the Greentree Stable was a distant fourth fourthPat Pat McGee Colorful and Grange were the three that survived the scratching process in the sixth and the Sagamore Stables gelded son of Huon was the winner with Colorful second and Grange third The trio were away to a good start with Colorful slightly in the lead The latter dominated the race in the early stages with Pat lUcGee at his quarters At the turn for home the Sagamore Stables gelding went to the front Grange was hard ridden all the way and was under punishment in the stretch but made up little ground groundGeorge George Odom ships Premier to Toronto to ¬ night to meet his Woodbine stake engage ¬ ment Saturday
