STAKE DAY AT WOODBINE Mr Gaiety Makes Amends for Defeat in Kings Plate Breeders and Victoria Stakes Helter Shelter ShelterSteeplechase Steeplechase and Prince of Wales WalesHandicap Handicap Among Features TORONTO Ont May 24 Mr Gaiety the racy looking son of For Pair Marion Gaiety which carries the colors of Mrs E Glassco made amends for his defeat in the Kings Plate on Saturday when he won the Breed ¬ ers Stakes at Woodbine Park today His vic ¬ tory was an impressive one Near the first turn Mr Gaiety was in trouble and was shuffled back to last position Entering the back stretch his chances appeared hopeless Moore sent him to the inside rail and was lucky in finding an opening Gradually im ¬ proving his position Mr Gaiety was well up with the leaders after passing the hilf mile post and on the far turn was taken to the outside Entering the stretch he caught and passed Ever More and in the final eighth drew away into a commanding lead At the finish he had a fivelengths lead over Ever More which in turn downed Perlapides by eight lengths for second place placeIt It was a splendid program that the Ontario Jockey Club offered racegoers The card simply teemed with features among the at ¬ tractions being the Helter Skelter Steeple ¬ chase with 2000 added over the twomile course the Victoria Stakes 5000 added for twoyearolds and the Prince of Wales Handicap 2500 added at threequarters threequartersWm Wm Mahers Reprove followed up his vic ¬ tory of yesterday and gave another good ac ¬ count of himself when he gathered in the main portion of the purse in the Victoria Stakes one of the features of the day and incidentally was the first double winner of the meeting meetingReprove Reprove had the services of jockey F Horn who on the first day had the mount on Ryland H News Kings Plate winner Troutlet and by winning this race Horn added another stake victory to his credit creditThe The Victoria Stakes run as the third race on the program attracted a field of twelve starters The Whitney entry com ¬ posed of Cayuga and Inquisitor was installed favorite This pair was conspicuous throughout the running and at the end of the journey wound up in second and third positions respectively Cayuga made the pace until a few yards from the finishing mark before giving way to the Maher starter Inquisitor came from the middle of the pack to finish going stoutly although beaten six lengths for second place with Wind Flower three lengths further back Reproves vic ¬ tory added just 4300 to her winning list for the year yearIt It was a good field of sprinters that went to the post in the Prince of Wales Handicap In the early running Worthmore dashed to the front and closely pursued by Aucilla set a fast pace to the top of the stretch where Aucilla took command The latter drew away without effort in the final eighth Continued on twentieth page STAKE DAY AT WOODBINE Contiuued from first page and at the finish led Penstick by a length and a quarter Penstick began rather slug ¬ gishly and trailed his rivals until the last quarter when he moved up and easily dis ¬ posed of the others He was coupled in the betting with the winner winnerThe The Fashion Plate the opening race for fillies and mares exclusively over the three quarters mile route resulted in a mild sur ¬ prise when Dignus sporting the colors of C L Whiting prominent breeder and show horseman of Avon N Y scored over Pat ¬ ricia J beating the latter by a length after racing in the van of her opponents from the rise of the barrier and at one stage of the journey enjoying a lead of four lengths Patricia J was installed an oddson choice but her weight evidently proved too much of a handicap to compete with the fleet footed daughter of Meridian Dignity DignityThe The Winburn Stables Oyster Bed proved a cantering winner of the two miles of the Helter Skelter Steeplechase which was de ¬ cided through a field that was soggy and slippery from excessive rains Despite the treacherous condition of the course seven answered the call and the race provided some excellent entertainment for the large throng on hand Oyster Bed was well thought of by his connections and his victory proved highly popular with the crowd Second to the win ¬ ner but beaten twentyfive lengths came Ruine which withstood a long drive to get a neck decision over Kankaroo the public choice Two mishaps marred the running when Top Notch racing in the lead fell at the thirteenth fence and Guingamp broke down before taking the twelfth
