WHISKERY STARTER IN THE FAIRMOUNT DERBY Kentucky Derby Winner Among the Seyen Named for 25000 Feature tf il J Osmand Jock Rolled Stocking Buddy Bauer and Black Panther Form Strong Oppo ¬ sition for the Whitney Star COLLINSVILLE 111 June 3 Saturday will witness the decision of the second running of the Fairmount Derby at the mile and a quarter distance for threeyearolds and endowed with 25000 in added money Its inaugural race last year culminated in one of the closest finishes of the year and enabled J E Wideners Haste to emerge victor over E R Bradleys sturdy Bagenbaggage with the latters stable companion Boot to Boot in third place This year finds an unusual condition surrounding the race It brings to the post along with many other cracks the first three placed horses in the Kentucky Derby Whiskery Osmand and Jock There is an additional interesting feature attaching to the meeting of this trio again their first since the Louisville classic in that Whiskery which carried off honors in the Kentucky Derby after a terrific struggle to down his rivals is attempting to concede eight pounds to his sturdy opponents His weight is 126 pounds The difference in his impost and that carried by the other male entries in the race is an eightpound penalty in ¬ curred by his Louisville triumph On cold figures the weight assignment should bring about a reversal of decision of the recent Kentucky Derby running Whiskery only defeated Osmand by inches and in the light of the latters concession the Wedener rep ¬ resentative is considered by the sharps to jhold the Whitney colt safe Trainer Fred Hopkins however does not share this view XDn the contrary he is of firm belief that Whiskery not alone will concede the eight jpounds successfully but also win in easy manner mannerOsmand Osmand and Whiskery came by the same train in separate cars and were unloaded at the temporary chute close to Fairmount Park about 5 30 p m The colts shipped in great style In addition to their regular retinue of handlers trainer Dick Denny and jockey Earl Sande came with Osmand Trainer Fred Hopkins and jockey Shillick Continued on twentyfirst pa e FAIRMODNT PARK DERBY Continued from first page accompanied Whiskery Jockey Ambrose who will have the mount on Whiskery is due to arrive from New York this evening eveningTaking Taking the advance reservation sale as an indication the attendance to witness tomor ¬ rows feature race will exceed the crowd that was on hand to view JJastes triumph in the inaugural running That was a large crowd also the second largest that turned out at any racing course last year on an American track and exceeded only by the vast throng at Louisville to witness Bubbling Over win the Kentucky Derby DerbyBright Bright sunshine and a stiff breeze would cause a good if not a fast track to prevail but the murky atmosphere presages more rain and it is doubtful if the course will improve much over its present heavy state stateThe The seven intended starters in the race however have raced well in muddy or heavy going and the track should not militate against them themGeneral General manager C Bruce Head and his efficient staff have planned extensively for the comfort of the immense crowd expected and hearty cooperation has been received from the highway authorities and all roads will be adequately patroled and traffic kept on the move There is little danger of heavy congestion to and from the track on account of the several new roads that have been built since last fall fallWhile While the main interest seems to center about Whiskery and Osmand there is con ¬ siderable antipost support for Jock and Rolled Stocking StockingBuddy Buddy Bauer seems to have become sud ¬ denly friendless even Handy Mandy develop ¬ ing considerable strength This is probably due to her big pull in weights because of her maiden allowance allowanceTrainer Trainer F Hopkins and jockey Shillock accompanied Whiskery Jockey Ambrose who will have the mount on Whiskery is due to arrive from New York this even ¬ ing ingWhile While interest is centering on Whiskery and Osmand such sterling ones as Jock Black Panther Rolled Stocking and Buddy Bauer are not being overlooked overlookedBlack Black Panther particularly has secured for himself a considerable following and it includes some shrewd horsemen who have been greatly impressed with the preliminary trials he has been performing over all kinds of going He has performed almost sensa ¬ tionally when the track was heavy Last Monday he went a mile in 1 41 when it took others their best effort to turn a mile in 1 45 His most recent preliminary occurred Thursday over a stiff course when he cov ¬ ered a mile and an eighth in 1 58 rather handily handilyToday Today found six of the Derby starters be ¬ ing given limbering up process Jock went a mile and cantered under sharp restraint to cover the distance in 14G His gallop was the longest for the others were only asked to perform over short distances Whiskery ran fiveeighths under a stiff pull in 1 05 Os ¬ mand went the same distance in 1 03 with an inclination to sprint in the early stages Buddy Bauer went half a mile in 52 hard held and Rolled Stocking covered three quarters in 119 The racing strip was heavy and holding holdingTrainer Trainer John F Schorr was in a quandry as to who would ride the McLean repre ¬ sentative Chick Lang incurred a tenday suspension at Homewood for rough riding on Prince of Wales in the opening stake feature and he is trying to get a modifica ¬ tion of this suspension from the Washington Park officials to enable the rider to have the mount in the Drby
