LATONIAS INAUGURAL Great Interest Manifested in the Opening of Covington Meeting 25000 Added Latonia Derby DerbyIndependence Independence Handicap and andLatonia Latonia Oaks Features LATONIA Ky June 3 On the eve of the inauguration of another spring and summer meeting of thoroughbred horse racing at Latonia it seems that never before in the farreaching and traditional history of the Covington course has the outlook for suc ¬ cessful racing been more pronounced On every hand anticipation of the nearing meet ¬ ing has for some time been well manifested and unless this unprecedented display of interest is widely misleading Latonia is des ¬ tined to enjoy what may prove new attend ¬ ance standards With all of the better grade western stables scheduled for participation in the thirtyone day meeting that will conclude on July 1 a much improved track and other betterments to the plant it seems that the only possible chance for indications to go amiss rests with the weather man Today he served unseasonably cold weather under a clouded sky following a night of rain that left a slow track which will require the best possible drying weather to be returned to top condition for usage Saturday SaturdayWith With the greatest nomination lists for Im ¬ pending renewals of the principal features of the big meeting the meeting should witness an abundance of the best possible racing racingMuch Much of this will be at the more popular distances of one mile or more five of the six stakes for threeyearolds and older that will be presented having decisions over longer distances Three other features which will have annual running during the meeting are given over to twoyearolds The 25000 added Latonia Derby at one mile and a half and for which all of the leading threeyear olds of the country are eligible again stands alone as the outstanding attraction This fixture will have its annual running on Satur ¬ day June 25 The Independence Handicap and Latonia Oaks each of which will carry 10000 in added money come next for mone ¬ tary value although the six other 5000 added features have never failed to provide excellent racing in which virtually all of the leaders of the respective divisions have participated participatedSTABS STABS FOB DERBY DERBYThe The late running of the Latonia Derby will provide a splendid chance for the starting of several successful twoyearolds of last year which did not come to hand for the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes StakesOf Of course the stars of the last two men ¬ tioned stakes are among the Latonia Derby eligibles and adding Valorous Bonaire and Dinner Dance to such as Whiskery Black Panther Jock Buddy Bauer Bostonian Jus ¬ tice F Scapa Flow Bewithus Fred Jr Saxon Rolled Stocking Rip Rap Osmand and Royal Julian make for a field that somewhat overshadows many of the previous efforts effortsThere There is a strong possibility of a shortage of finished jockeys and with only a limited few likely prospects among the apprentices it seems that such wiry veterans as Mack Garner Danny Connelly Willie Crump and Walter Lilley will continue in the ascendency during the Latonia meeting These riders as well as a few other members of the older division have been enjoying unusual but nevertheless well deserved success during the current season Following the running of the Fairmount Derby Saturday the Latonia riding colony will receive additions in W Pool A John son W Lilley and C Lang all of whom have mounts in that important prize prizeTomorrows Tomorrows opening program has for its bright feature the fifteenth running of the 5000 added Inaugural Handicap a gallop of one and onesixteenth miles for which thir ¬ teen of the outstanding performers from among the threeyearolds and older horses accepted overnight No matter what the con ¬ dition of the track the field assures a bril ¬ liant renewal one that should well measure up to the best traditions of the race Jockey Mack Garner who will resume rid ¬ ing tomorrow for the first time since his hard fall from Candy Queen at Churchill Downs a week ago will endeavor to hang up his third victory in the stake with Kentucky Cardinal Garner won with Lady Madcap In 1922 and Captain Hal in 1925 1925BEAUTIES BEAUTIES OF LATONIA LATONIADespite Despite excessive rainfall throughout the spring Latonia is more beautiful than ever before its natural beauty having been en ¬ hanced by further beautification of the in ¬ field long regarded as being without an equal in this country Considerable painting has improved the appearance of several buildings about the grounds and the resoiling of the track will make it one of the finest In the land according to numerous horsemen horsemenThis This latter work is the major improvement to the plant since last fall and was brought about at great cost Track superintendent Charles Nolle has been highly complimented by many horsemen for the improvement which promises to provide patrons with fast racing over a safe wellcushioned track trackEvery Every arrangement for the meeting has been perfected for some time officials of the Kentucky Jockey Club today declaring that the plant was ready for the opening when the resoiling of the track was completed weeks ago All of the officials will be on hand for the inaugural Colonel M J Winn vice president and general manager making a trip from Chicago to oversee the opening The new meeting will witness no change in the racing department the sport being in charge of the same capable staff that was seen last year Charles F Price S C Nuckols T C Bradley and 13 Hogg are the stewards of the meeting with W H Shelley N H McClelland and E B Webb placing judges Shelley is also racing secretary and handicapper and McClelland clerk of scales William Hamilton will be in charge of the starling The field for the opening race will be called to the harrier at 2 oclock oclockF F J Kelleys Bonaire injured in a rac during the Lexington
