DOMOSEL SURPRISES Keenland Studs Filly Unexpected Winner of Homewood Feature Dimple Punkie Scores Easily Over OverRed Red Grange Power Best of ofStarters Starters in Sixth Race HOMEWOOD 111 June 3 An outstand ¬ ing surprise was the result of the running of the Madonna Purse for fillies and mares threeyearolds and over principal attrac tion offered by the Illinois Jockey Club at Washington Park this afternoon The Keen land Studs threeyearold North Star III filly Damosel was winner after a fine dis ¬ play of speed throughout the entire three quarters over which distance the race was run The Coldstreams filly Barbara wound up in second place Lady Marie finished close up for the third portion of the purse purseDamosel Damosel was in fine form and away well at the start soon took command and racing gamely was never headed thereafter although called upon to withstand several challenges in the stretch from Lady Marie Damosel increased her pace inside the last eighth of a mile and shaking off Lady Marie came to the finish winner by two lengths from Barbara The latter filly fin ¬ ished with a burst cf speed and racing along on the inside got up in the final stages to defeat Lady Marie for second place The Dearborn Stables Chaff finished fourth while Silver Song and Fannie May the other starters followed Silver Song was a dis ¬ appointing favorite favoriteDamosel Damosel finished fast and her rider jockey A Root was unable to restrain her after the finish and could not manage to pull her up The filly got away from his restrain ¬ ing hold and running away with the boy in the saddle speeded once around the mile and an eighth course before she could be brought under control and returned to the judges stand standLADY LADY LUHA SCOUES SCOUESThe The Derby Stable annexed its first purse in the opening race when its Lady Lura ridden by jockey J Bollero gave a good account of herself and sprinted to victory in a close decision over Omnia High Joy and the other nine starters The closest finish of the meeting was witnessed here when the first six of the field dashed past the judges in almost perfect alignment The finish was exceedingly close and it was only with the official placings that the winners were deter ¬ mined Lady Lura was an outsider and fur ¬ nished a surprise Waponoca and High Joy were the favorites The speculation was brisk briskJ J P Partridges twoyearold colt Fer seth scored his owners first success here when he took the measure of some good youngsters which tried conclusions in the second race at fiveeighths True Pal raced to second place while Bird wood landed in the third column Birdwood raced away fast from the barrier into a long lead and ap ¬ peared the winner but tiring in the closing stages was an easy victim for the fast fin ¬ ishing Ferseth which came with a rush at the end and taking the lead won by a safe margin marginTrue True Pal got up in the final strides to also outfinish Birdwood for the place W S Kilmers Mintwik was the favorite in this race but could do no better than race in fourth place throughout throughoutC C Houbres good filly Dimple Dunkie rac ¬ ing in her best form won a purse when she raced to an easy victory over the three quarters mile route in the third race Red Grange finished close to the winner while Sturdy Stella was third Bight good three yearold platers started in this race and Red Orange away fast at the start im ¬ mediately raced into a sixlength lead in the first quartermile under the hustling ride of Continued ou twenty first DOMOSEL SURPRISES Continued from first pace jockey M McGonigle Sturdy Stella Enga dine and Dimple Dunkic were close up among the nearest pursurers of Red Grange Ap ¬ proaching the stretch Red Granges lead began to dwindle and the others soon closed the gap he had opened up upSwinging Swinging into the stretch Dimple Dunkie came fast and gaining steadily in the final drive got up at the end to overhaul Red Grange and easily won going away awayC C N Freeman scored his first winning race of the meeting when Power got home In front of eight others in the sixth race carrying L Hardy across the line four lengths In front of Levoy Levoy set a fast pace in tho early stages and after being nicely rated by Pendergrass tired suddenly on reaching the stretch turn Power had forced the pace all the way and came with a burst of speed in the stretch YapiU a rank outsider ran an even race and held on well Tor third money
