Probable Starters in Camden Handicap, Inaugural Stake Attraction — Latest Arrivals. ♦ LEXINGTON, Ky., Arpil 18.— Training operations at the Kentucky Association track were curtailed this morning by a slow track, made muddy by showers lat _ Tuesday, but general activity presaged the inauguration of the spring meeting of thirteen days Saturday. Schooling of juveniles and older horses was continued by Hugh Gilmore and his assistants, but there was a noticeable depression in the number of racers sent to the barrier, while the workouts were few, the track was •-ell filled with horses out for useful gallops and the sand track, neglected the past few days, again was kept busy. Racing secretary William H. Shelley received a number of stable lists, and requests for badges from trainers and his department faces several days of hard work in this respect. He will be joined in the office tomorrow by his son Robert S. Shelley, who arrived today from his home in Louisville. With the exception of William Hamilton, starter ; N. H. McClelland, clerk of the scales ; Dr. J. T. Chawk, paddock judge and E. A. Weidekamp, manager of the pari-mutuels department, all the officials are here for the meeting. With the weights for the Camden Handicap issued by Judge Shelley, turfmen represented by eligibles immediately began figuring the chances of their candidates and a large field is expected in the mile and a sixteenth race. The more probable starters appear to be J. N. Camdens Calvados and Hiram ; Coldstream Farms Barbara ; George Collins* Nedda and Shark ; W. Dondas Mickey D. and My Eva ; Fair Acre Farms Genial Host and Fire On ; Mose Goldblatf -, Marconi ; J. J. Greelys Devon ; H. Masseys Florian and C. W. Moores Lieutenant Mansfield. TOP WEIGHTS ABSENT. None of the top weighted horses. Flat Iron, Buddy Bauer and Rolled Stocking, with the exception of Marconi, is expected to start, the latter has been assigned 11G pounds, and the other intended starters will carry less than 108 pounds. In numbers, the jockey colony for the im- pending meeting will be as large as ever, but a wealth of talent may be lacking. Few of the outstanding experienced riders will be here and successful apprentices will number but one or two. Among the older riders already here are E. Pool, W. Garner, W. Fronk, W. Anderson, D. Connelly. T. Murray, E. Scobie, P. Ray. W. Lauscher, J. Mazoue, C. Hain3worth, j. Berry. K. Horvath, K. Hoffman, A. Abel and H. Glick. The younger group of riders will include C. Meyer, leading rider at Havana, and who has given first call to H. P. Headley ; J. M. Dale, E. Fewell, J. Mcllvain. S. Bond, W. Noel, G. Collins, L. McClair. E. Mumm and T. Luther, winner of the Coffroth Handicap on Crystal Pennant and the Tijuana Futurity on Spooky at the recent meeting. Murray has just arrived from New York, where he rode last year. He is anxious to become affiliated with a western stable. Fronk has temporarily joined the stable of C. W. Moore. " The latter owner has two of his exercise boys on the hospital list. George Stone suffered a badly bruised head when Truthful fell dead under him Monday and Elmo Clark received a broken collarbone Tuesday when I. Davis plunged into White Nose while under speed. Both horses were reported in improved condition today, neither having received more than bruises and a severe shaking up. ADDITIONS FROM LOUISVILLE. Four trainers arrived today from Louis- ville with their horses. They were Joe Hub-l bard, with five; Mose Shapoff, with six; E. and Mocar, with four and Jack MacPherson, with six. Charles Rowe has arrived from New Or- leans and immediately visited Howard Blacks farm near Frankfort, to inspect his colt foal by Chatterton, out of the brilliant race mare Miss Jemima. Otto Torrell and "Honey" Rossacher have joined the ranks of owners. They have Turn On and Thunder Call ready for racing here. Sewell S. Combs, member of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, said the action in Illinois of denying licenses to seven jockeys would not influence the Kentucky body in acting on requests for riding permits from these boys. "The case of each jockey is decided on its merits by us," Mr. Combs said. The Kentucky State Racing Commission meets Saturday. Only a few Derby eligible were given work- outs today and none proved to be strenuous. Dark Eagle was sent three-quarters in 1 :21.
