At Havre de Grace One Best Bet — BLACK FRIAR — In the Fifth Race. , i i ; , , The Everglades Purse and the Good and Gay Purse brings the best fields to the post on Thursdays program at Havre de Grace. The Everglades Purse calls for a contest over the one mile and seventy yards distance and it engages a band of three-year-olds, to race under allowance conditions. Black Friar appears much the best of the six that are entered, and we are looking for him to prove the best play of the day. The Good and Gay Purse, restricted to three-year-old fillies, brings a well matched band of the fair racers to the barrier. One Hour gets the call, but she will ba meeting tough opposition from Skylight and Cassandra. She is making her first start of the year, but her workouts indicate she is in her best form. NEVADA STOCK FARM STABLE ENTRY —WRAP— CALM. CARAVAN and VIOLADO, that will compromise the Nevada Stock Farm Stable entry in the opening affair at four and one-half furlongs distance, appear to be a safe betting proposition. Both horses are well suited to the distance and, at the weights, should be hard to beat. WRAP, from the barn of William Garth, has shown good speed in her only two races and, with a little improvement and weight off today, may make the Nevada pair extend themselves to the limit. CALM should have no trouble in getting the short end of the purse. She has an excellent chance to lead the field all the way. TALLADEGA— EVERGLADE— COLONEL SETIL The second race is rather a hard race to figure as the horses entered seem to be rather evenly matched. TALLADEGA, although picking up eleven pounds over his last start, will only have to race back to that effort to annex the major portion of the purse. He came from far back and showed good speed considering the condition of the track. EVERGLADE, at one time known as a sprinter, has been competing in distance races. With a good start he may prove dangerous today as the distance is only three-quarters of a mile. COLONEL SETH has been off form lately, but we look for some improvement today. We think he is capable of holding the others safe for the short end. PHEASANT should not be overlooked. INTERMISSION— DEPOSITION — HONI SOIT. INTERMISSION showed good form at Havana, although she has never won a race. If she can run back to those recent efforts, she should take down this purse without much trouble. DEPOSITION was scratched Tuesday, and it looks like they are waiting for a spot to drop him in. His most recent races indicate that he is getting near top form, and we look for him to leave the maiden ranks soon. HONI SOIT is getting a big cut in the weights and, if that means anything, should prove dangerous. ROOK-LAND BOY looks best of the others. ONE HOUR— SKYLIGHT— CASS A NDR. The fourth race, the Good and Gay Purse, brings to the post a band of three-year-old fillies to contest over the five and one-half furlongs under allowance conditions. ONE HOUR may be the one to prove best. She will be making her initial start of the year. She has been burning up the track in her morning works and seems ready for a winning race at the first asking. SKYLIGHT figures to be dangerous for, taking a line on her Bowie races, she seems to have rounded into her best form. CASSANDRA may be able to take down the short end of the purse. She has been training well and seems to have lost none of her old-time speed. BLACK FRIAR— MEMORIA— BIG CHIEF. W. J. Salmons BLACK FRIAR seems much the best of the small field that is entered in the Everglades Purse, which will be run as the fifth race. While at Jefferson Park he turned in two good wins over some good ones and, on those races, seems to hold an edge over this band. He is asked to carry top weight, but we doubt if this will stop him from winning. MEMORIA turned in a good race behind Gold Bet the last time and, as she is getting in under a light impost, we look for her to prove the most serious contender. BIG CHIEF should lie able to finish up with the leader?; should he be ready for one of his good efforts. ED PENDLETON— MONS MEG-SIR LEONID. Of the band of platers entered in the sixth race ED PENDLETON has to be given the call for the winners share of the purse. In his three races at Bowie he finished in the money and, on the speed he showed in those races, we look for him to prove a winner today. MONS MEG seems to be rounding into his old-time form and he may be the one to cause ED PENDLETON the most trouble. SIR LEONID had a hard winter campaign at New Orleans and. though he seems to have trained off a little, we think he is able to take down the short end of the purse. SAM SMITH— POWDER— TRIFLE. The final number .of the afternoons program has an even dozen platers to contest over the one and three-sixteenths miles distance. The race in itself seems an open affair, as no one horse seems to stand out over the others entered. On past performances SAM SMITH is the logical selection, as he has shown better form than his opponents. POWDER showed flashes of speed around the Maryland circuit last year, but so far has shown nothing or his real form. With some improvement on his part he may get up for second money. TRIFLE ran a few good races at Havana and we look for him to do even better here.
