DERBY GROWS IN MAGNITUDE Attendance Exceeds All Former Years, Despite Rain — Mutuel Handle Smaller. LOUISVILLE. Ky., May 21.— Executive director Col. Matt J. Winn found surcease from his labors at 2 a. m. Monday and he then retired, complacent and with a smile of extreme satisfaction. The final check up on the Derby showed that it had exceeded former years. Every year the Derby has grown in magnitude, but when the heavy storm came there was anxiety that it would not come up to that of last year, the record one. It surpassed it, however, by a small margin. Had the weather continued fine there is every reason to believe that the attendance would have been considerably greater and the volume of play also considerably in excess of what it was. The play fell off about 4,000 compared with last year, but the attendance was larger. The total volume of play amounted to ,889, 230. The handle on the Derby alone was 1928.sh20,793, as against 7G,4S3 the previous year.
