♦ REIGH COUNT Theres many a lesson we can learn From mans best known friend, How pluck and perseverance Is rewarded in the end. A year ago, a two-year-old Was making his "debut" ; His early efforts little showed What some day he would do. But day by day he seemed to learn To do what he was told. And ended up the season As our best two-year-old. He wintered up in Illinois, Near one of her small towns, But finished getting ready For the Derby at "The Downs." And he sure was good and ready As he showed on Derby Day, To chase him round that muddy track Was anything but play. Unhampered by any kind of "Toro," "Distraction" or "Misstep," When called up by jockey Lang Ready to answer "yep." Yes, and in a fashion Of a horse thats fast and game. The name of Reigh Count entered The Derby Hall of Fame. There was no fear or favor Shown by horse or man. The best Kentucky Derby, Is the verdict of each fan. And his win was surely welcome By the many thousands there. For they always like an owner Who is known as fair and square. The glorious thrill of winning A Derby cant be told. For its one of those sensations That cant be bought with gold. — Kildare. »
