TWO FOR E. B. McLEAN ♦ * Toro and Hades Triumph at Churchill Downs Course. ♦ i ! Son of The Porter Romps to Victory Over Blackwood and Calf Roper. • LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 15.— The colors of Edward B. McLean, Washington and Cincinnati publisher and sportsman, this afternoon, were carried to the first double success of the present Churchill Downs meeting and missed by inches of scoring a third triumph. His double victory was completed when his crack Toro was returned an easy winner of the Kentucky Hotel Handicap, over one and one sixteenth miles, after Hades had carried the famous colors victoriously in the previous race. Toro, carrying top weight of 122 pounds, was guided to his victory over a slow track by Pascuma, who also rode Hades. The star four-year-old ran the distance in 1:47%. which marked a fine performance over the testing course, yet even so, was never fully extended and while he only led Blackwood by a neck at the finish, Pascuma brought him home under restraint and he might easily have won by an overwhelming margin. While Buttered Toast and Calf Roper were in the more forward positions for the first half mile, both Toro and Blackwood were under restraint and when ready on the second turn quickly sped past their younger rivals. In the stretch Toro, after gaining a short advantage over Blackwood, held it with the utmost ease as C. Meyer urged Blackwood, in his vain endeavor to cope successfully with his illustrious rival. As they waged their one-sided duel. Calf Roper stuck to his task with sufficient speed to take third place from Buttered Toast while Ben Machree followed the small band throughout. Geo. Groom, from the Valley Lake Stable, was the winner over Two Bills, Billy K. and eleven other platers in the opening race at six and a half furlongs, for which Crestwood was the choice. The latter after getting away poorly, was never a factor. Geo. Groom was ridden by apprentice W. Rideout, under contract to the winning stable, and it was his initial triumph. The youngster exhibited good judgment for, after getting his mount away well, he restrained him in a contending position until reaching the final three-eighths, where he moved slowly and Geo. Groom was up to win by a half length. The colors of R. S. Clark were carried with much success by his Lion Heart and Vigorous in the second race, over seven-eighths mile, for older maidens in which they finished first and third as named. They fought it out with E. B. McLeans Moscow and the trio raced to the finish inches apart. It was their race all through the stretch, where Lion Heart, after wresting the lead from Moscow, tired near the finish t-nd just lasted. Vigorous finished with a rush and just failed to get up for second and first place as well. Continued on twentieth page. TWO FOR E. B. McLEAN Continued from first page. Mrs. W. J. Potter furnished the winner of the third race in Master Sweep which apprentice L. Jones rated in front for the entire one mile and a sixteenth and hustled home a handy winner over Pollyweg, with Padona third. Contrasting Jones f.lert and well-judged ride on the winner were the efforts of the inexperienced Rideout on Padona and Gooler on McCulloch. Both probably would have been much stronger factors under more able rides. The fourth race, a claiming affair for two-year-olds, resulted in a victory for E. B. McLeans Hades, ridden by Pascuma. The winner, after wresting the lead in the stretch from Campion, the pacemaker, for most cf the way, held on in game fashion to out-finish Gotta Gonow and Beekeeper. Campion retired during the final stages and finished in fifth place. The latter was an outstanding faorite in the field of ten. Roll em Down brought early dismay to his following when he bolted on the turn and W. Pool pulled him up. ♦
