BEGORRA STUNS BY VICTORY ♦ Manner in Which Colt Wins Astonishes Jamaica Spectators. 1 Makes Muddy Track Appear Fast by Galloping One Mile In 1:38 to Take Southampton Handicap. 1 - NEW YORK, N. Y., May 15.— Begorra a black son of The Finn— Heydiy, which races for W. R. Coe, turned in a sensational effort to be winner of the Southampton Handicap, which was offered as the feature attraction at Jamaica this afternoon. The colt was the lightweight of the party, but the manner of his winning over shadowtrt interest in the remainder of the race. Mei Foo, from the Rancocas Stable, was the one to race to second place, while E. F. Stanfords Brown Wizard was a tired and distant third. When Begorra moved up to the leaders near the turn and drew away into a commanding lead, which he gradually increased to the end, the crowd was so astonished that a cheer was not forthcoming for the winner. Racing conditions this afternoon were vastly improved over those of the previous day, but the track was still muddy from the heavy rains, but in different spots ; was drying out fast Little time was lost at the post in the Southampton Handicap and, from a good start, Brown Wizard raced into command. Mei Foo raced along after him with the Others well bunched. These positions were maintained to the middle of the back stretch and it was there that Begorra moved up. He moved up readily and in so doing bothered Mei Foo, forcing Fator into close quarters and causing him to take up sharply to keep from going down. Begorra, in a few more Strides, had disposed of Brown Wizard and Lyons allowed him to draw away. He quickly increased his advantage and at the end was ten lengths clear of his opponents. Mei Foo finished well after recovering and was an easy second, while Brown Wizard was a tired and distant third. Annapolis and Stormy Dawn were disappointments. FAST TIME. Begorra made the track appear fast and negotiated the mile in 1:38. The winner added ,200 to the stable coffers and completed a double for D. Lyons, his rider. Sixteen platers started in the opening race and the winner turned up in Golden Pennant, racing for the Mahopac Stable, in a drive over Mad Sketch, while Wise Crack, racing for James Butler, was third. The field left the post in good alignment and Burnt Sienna rushed into the lead. Mad Sketch was after her, while Golden Pennant and Wise Crack were close up. Entering the stretch Burnt Sienna began to falter and Robertson began moving up with Golden Pennant. The latter responded gamely, but it was not until the final sixteenth that he wore down Mad Sketch and Wise Crack. The latter had no excuses at the end. Jolly Pal, racing for Mrs. B. C. Hart, proved an easy winner of the fifth race after drawing away into a long lead in the early stages. Panguitch was the one to finish second, ■ while Tackle, from the Rancocas Stable, was third. The winner, beginning from the outside, came over fast but clear and was soon in front. From then on he never left much doubt as to the ultimate result. Panguitch was racing in second place, while Tackle, after being urged in the early stages, found the task a hopeless one. The Nostrand Claiming Handicap, which attracted a field of five starters, proved an easy victory for the Rosedale Stables Juggler, over W. Keatings Willie K., while Mrs. ; J. A. Coburns Caroler was third. The winner | was ridden by D. Lyons and followed the early pace under restraint. When straightened out on the back stretch Juggler moved into command with ease, racing Caroler into defeat and then drew away. Willie K., which 1 Stumbled on the first turn, began his move midway on the far turn and at the end was 1 going fast. Caroler, which was used up considerably racing Crash into defeat, was taken 1 wide in the stretch and finished on his own i courage. Crash quit badly after showing a flash of early speed, while Stern Chaser, at no stage of the race, was a factor. EASY WINNER. Battleship Gray, racing for the Glen Riddle Stable, proved an easy winner of the third race of the day, a condition affair over three-quarters. He showed the way to James Butlers Star o Morn, while A. J. Goldsboroughs John Cavanagh was third. The start was a good one and Battleship Gray was quickly rushed into command and showing a liking for the going, he drew away steadily and shaking off opposition from Cheers and Star o Morn entering the stretch, drew away. The latter came to the outside and finishing fast could not get to the winner, but was .°n easy second. John Cavanagh, after saving ground, outstayed Cheers at the end for the minor portion of the purse. J. Pat McGovern of Baltimore lost no time following his arrival from Pimlico and accounted for his first race when Ruby Keller, ridden by Renick, came from the rear of the leaders and wore down the leaders to earn the major award in the sixth race. H. W. Maxwells Blabber was the one to finish second while G. M. Wilsons Drawing Board was third. The race was for platers and the conditions called for apprentice members of the kindergarten class to ride. Drawing Board was used up considerably in the running by racing Omareen into defeat in the early stages and then succumbed to the challenge of Blabber. The latter in turn fell before the rush of Ruby Keller. This miss came fast at the end and wore down the tired and spent leaders.
