EXPECT STRENUOUS BATTLE Trainer of Clyde Van Dnsen Predicts Victory After Stubbornly Contested Struggle. Clyde Van Dusen, winner of the Kentucky Derby, favoring the track conditions confronting him in the American Derby, may be expected to give his best, but there is danger besetting him, in the opinion of his tranier, after whom the Mna oWar horse is named. "Eight pounds is plenty of weight to concede any horse," said trainer Van Dusen. "It is an advantage that might prove disastrous. I am offering no alibi. Any practical horseman is aware that high weight, 126 pounds, on Clyde Van Dusen, as against 118 carried by African, is not altogeiner reassuring. "It is true Clyde Van Dusen likes a sloppy track, but racing over a course such as we shall have Saturday is different. Africans race in the Belmont Stakes was over a track something like that at Churchill Downs Derby Day. "I know that African and Dr. Freeland are worthy competitors. If the American Derby included Clyde Van Dusen and the two horses from New York, it would be a good race. We shall be trying every inch of the mile and a quarter. I am confident we shall win it, but my guess is it will be a better contest than the Kentucky Derby."
