t LATONIA TURF NOTES $ 4 LATONIA, Ky., June 18. R. S. Clarks Current this morning had her final hard preparation for her impending eng/agement in the Illinois Oaks at Washington Park, Saturday, when she went a mile in 1:44% over a heavy track at I,atonia. She went the quarter in :25, half-mile in :50%, and three-quarters in 1:17%. Tomorrow she will be shipped to the Illinois track in the same car with J. N. Camdens sterling Rose of Sharon, the winner of the Ashland and Kentucky Oaks and likely for the Illinois Oaks. Plumbago, which trainer Jack Baker of the Clark stable may send after the L.atonia Derby honors, was sent a half-mile in :50% this morning and will be indulged with a more extended workout Wednesday. It developed this morning that the Jacques Stables Essare, which arrived hero last week from Churchill Downs, is a doubtful starter in the Latonia Derby. The thrte-year-olds training was interrupted by illness, which he contracted shortly after filling his engagement in the Kentucky Derby. Preparations were being made to receive H. P. Gardners Kentucky Derby winner, Clyde Van Dusen, and R. T. Wilsons African, both intended starters in the Latonia Derby. They are scheduled to arrive here Wednesday, coming from Washington P;irk. African finished third in Saturdays running of the American Derby at the Illinois track. James C. Ellis, owner of the Dade Park track, was a visitor. He reported that plans for the coming annual summer meeting at that course are shaping up nicely and is extremely confident that the season will prove one of the most successful in the record of the track. The horses which have been carrying the Ellis colors at Bainbridge and which are trained by E. V. Bellew are due here this week. Apprentice Willie Carroll, a local boy, is to accompany the stable from the Cleveland track, where he has been riding with much success. Apprentice Jake Curd, the Lexington youngster, who rc-de his first race astride Beaumont yesterday, is highly regarded by former jockey Walter Taylor, the Headley trainer. and jockey Willie Fronk. the veteran first-string rider for the stable. The young rider finished second with his initial mount, riding an exceedingly well-judged race. He is under contract to H. P. Headley and is 17 years old. Jockey Eddie Legere arrived from New York and was a visitor at the track. The horses. Fairy Maiden, Fly Hawk, Pessimistic and Wizardry, have been purchased at private terms from William Maher of Miami by James MeGee. Announcement was made by the latter here this afternoon. McGee has intentions of obtaining additional strength for his stable. 4
