BOOMS FINE IMPROVEMENT ♦ Displays Brilliant Speed to Win St. Lawrence Handicap. ♦ Cqunls Track Record for One Mile In Defeating William T. — Sabana Scores at Long Odds. » - MONTREAL. Que., June 18— Boom, the chestnut son of Huon. which races for the Bell Farm Stable, came back with a smashing food performance aft3r a poor effort the other clay and won the St. Lawrence Handicap at Blue Bonnets this afternoon. This was the feature race on the program offered by the Montreal Jockey Cluo. It was a race of one mile, and a field of ui* went to the post. Brown Wizard was a top-heavy favorite, but after racing in front and setting a rapid pace for five eighths began to tire badly in the stretch and finished last but one. The-stylis was the one to force the early pace and ran head and head with Brown Wizard until the far turn, where he shook off the leader. Boom came through on the inside at this stage, while William T. went to the outside. Going to the eighth post. Boom had taken command, with William T. close up and making a bold effort to head him. Boom, however, had a bit in reserve and in a driving finish won by three-quarters of a length. William T. beat the tiring Thestylis six lengths for second place and then came French Lass. The winner equaled the track record for the distance when he ran the mile in 1 :37%. The fractional time was :23%, :47%, 1:12%. Continued good weather brought out the full quota of racegoers. Well matched fields went to the post and a majority of the races found the winners under punishment to win, In some cases by small margins. NOT IN OOOD STANDING. Before the races this afternoon the officials were in receipt of a telegram from Algernon Daingerfield, secretary of the New York Jockey Club, informing them that the horses racing in the name of Mrs. Amanda Vaughan were not in good standing and as a result the horses Sara Burdon, Shakitup and Air Chief were withdrawn, pending investigation by the local olficials. The W. J. Salmon stable furnished the winner of the first race, a dash of five-eighths, for two-year-old maidens, when Companion came from behind in the stretch to get up in the last fifty yards. He won going away at the end by a length from Sylvia Mede. The latter showed a world of early speed, breaking from the extreme outside and sprinting into a lead of five lengths. She collapsed in the final eighth and was doing her best at the end to get second place a length and a half in front of Cavel. The pace was very fast, the quarter being run in :22% and the half mile in :47%. Moselle C. was responsible for eight minutes delay at the post. In one of her rearing lunges she fell and unseated her rider. John Robert was also fractious. SABANA A SURPRISE. • • A surprise came with the running of the second race, when Sabana beat the favorite, | Forecast II., by a length and a half in a I driving finish. There were eight starters and speculation was confined to Forecast II. and Jewel Kit. When the start came, Sabana began in second place and was soon out in front setting the pace. On the far turn. Forecast II. moved into second place and for a time it looked as if she would go to the front. Sabana, however, had something in reserve, and on entering the stretch, drew away again to open up a gap of two lengths. Stretton was riding Forecast II. in desperate fashion, but the latter failed to respond. Bloom Tip was third, beaten a length for second place, and then followed Silver Wedding. Jewel Kit was last but one. Zateslo appeared to be in trouble with the latter for the entire distance. At all events he kept taking up until he was last at one stage, and entering the stretch went very wide and at the finish went to the inside rail on top of the heels of Wee Toddler. At the conclusion of the Blue Bonnet meeting jockey G. Zateslo will report to his employer, H. Haymaker, whose horses have been shipped to Windsor to race at the Devonshire meeting.
