ILLINOIS OAKS SATURDAY ♦ Rose of Sharon and Current Expected at Homewood Today. ♦ . Western Stars to Encounter Stern Opposition from Several Formidable Eastern- Owned Rival*. ♦ Rose of Sharon and Current, star performers in the three-year-old filly division, will arrive today at Washington Park for their engagement in Saturdays 0,000 feature, the Illinois Oaks, over one mile and an eighth. Lady Broadcast, that brilliant chestnut daughter of Messenger — Couscous, which bears the silks of Rogers Caldwell, Nashville banker, is a sure starter in the Oaks. If no others went to the post this trio would represent top class in racing, East or West. Johnson N. Camden, owner of Rose of Sharon ; R. S. Clark, owner of Current, and Rogers Caldwell will be in attendance Saturday. Boxes have been assigned to them in the club house. Each will be accompanied by guests. It is within ttoe realm of possibility that one of the three may see his colors flash in victory in the Oaks. Rose of Sharon, triumphant in the Kentucky Oaks, had to battle with all courage and speed to defeat Lady Broadcast. Current, one of the most sensational of 1928 performers, continues to display high speed. She is said to be at the peak of her form. There will be grim opposition from other quarters. Rivalry between the owners of fillies seem keener than in recent years, for the obvious reason that filly three-year-olds of today are far in front of development shown by a majority of the colts of same age. Eastern turfmen are going to make a bid for the honor of winning the Illinois Oaks. Altitude, by High Cloud — Torque, is to be sent by the Audley Farm Stable. Mrs. F. Ambrose Clark will be represented by Aquas-tella, by Cudgel— Waterblossom. W. R. Coe eligibles are Progeny and Blood Royal, both by The Finn ; also Cowslip, Vanity and Passe, all by Over There. Willis Sharpe Kilmers Mint Friary, by Mint Briar — Friary, brought here by Andy Blakely, has been given careful preparation for this race. There are several eastern horsemen who will send fillies into this fray, chief among them being Earl Sande, rider-owner, who is on the scene galloping in person his entries Nearby and Safety Pin. both by Friar Rock. Nearby is believed to be the one Sande will send postward. She has been showing all that he expects. It seems assured that Nearby will parade and that Sande for the first time this season in Chicago will be seen in the saddle. Sande is in perfect physical condition. Through the past winter he exercised his horses at Bowie course. He resided in the national capitol. The outdoor life has re- tODtiuurd on twenty-fourth page. His confidence in Nearby indicates that, while he realizes Rose of Sharon, Lady Broadcast, Current and some of the others are to be feared, he has one equipped to offer dangerous opposition. Sande has Nearby and Safety Pin in the Francis S. lVabody Memorial Handicap, final 0, HH feature at Washington Park, scheduled for decision Saturday, June 29. In this race, over one mile and a quarter, for three-year-olds and over, Sande will strive for the rich prize and a trophy to be presented by Stuy-vesant Peabody. son of the gentleman after whom the handicap is named.
