CALIFORNIA RACING TODAY : C7 A. OPEN TANFORAN PARK Another Attempt to Be Made to Revive the Sport. Wagering Under Modified Pari- Mutuel System Recently Held Within Law. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., April 4. After-a lapse of over a year, thoroughbred racing will return to the Bay district tomorrow when a thirteen-day meeting gets under way at the Tanforan track. Seven races are scheduled for opening day. The Inaugural feature will be a six furlong race, which will bring out some good sprinters, many of which made names for themselves at the Agua Caliente winter meeting. Among those slated to go to the post in the feature are Shasta Bullet and Doctor Wilson, which will race coupled as the Alio Carrodlo Stable entry, the speedy Morsun from the barn of C. B. Irwin, Lady Seth, champion filly of the Agua Caliente meeting, Crofton, A. A. Baronis fast sprinter. Good and Hot from the Meadowbrook Stable, and Proctor Hug, Watergap and Vision II. So great was the rush to the entry box this morning that the management, which had intended to run but six races a day, increased the number to seven for the first day. It seemed as if all owners at the course were anxious to give thoroughbred racing a real revival at the historic course and all were particularly desirous of showing their horses to the public on opening day. HEAVY ETRY LIST. Entries for the first race, a five and a half furlongs contest, were exceptionally heavy and the race was split. The same conditions will prevail in the first and second races. The third race is for two-year-olds and attracted a limit field, while the fifth and seventh races did likewise. The sixth race brings out eight stayers for the one mile and a sixteenth distance. That there will be no dearth of goodriders is shown by a glance at the jockey list. Forty riders have been granted permission to ride, and among them are some established saddle stars. Those, who will be seen in action during the meeting, are J. Parmalee, T. Teas-dale, W. Johns, J. Mulrooney, G. Depeso, C. Miller, S. Baird, W. Robertson, R. Greenwood, C. McHugh, D. Trivett, C. Corbett, H. Philpot, S. Wood, C. Callahan, J. Fredericks, E. Puttrich, J. Longo, -P. ICeiser, C. Hooper, E. Level, D. Neal, R. Ashley J. Collins, J. Pollard, V. Whisman, R. Warren, R. Mc-Daniels, E. Taplin, H. Cox and E. Neal. Jockey Willie Moran is recovering from a severe attack of tonsilitis, but will be in the . saddle next week. Five carloads of horses arrived from Agua Caliente yesterday and are ready to race. They shipped in good condition and several are entered on tomorrows program. Half a dozen horses, the property of the North-way Stable, were moved to Tanforan this morning in charge of Bert Johns. Eskimo, Sailor Boy and the remainder of the string will follow tomorrow. JUDGE MUItrilY IX CHARGE. Judge Joseph A. Murphy, who is mainly responsible for what promises to be a brilliant and successful revival here of the sport of kings, was the busiest man at the course today. Upon the shoulders of this noted turf official falls the brunt of the burden and he has worked tirelessly in order that sport lovers of this viqinity may have the best that racing can offer. He has secured good horses, capable and honest jockeys and a good staff of assisting officials, and he feels that the public will appreciate his efforts and lend their assistance in every way possible. Judge Murphy stated this morning that racing would be conducted on a high plane and strictly within the law. Bookmaking or other illegal forms of wagering will not be permitted at Tanforan. Special arrangements have been made to handle a capacity crowd tomorrow. The bus and electric lines have promised adequate transportation and the ample parking space will take care of" those who wish to travel by private motor. The first race will be started on opening day at 2:30 and the races will be run off at thirty minute intervals. Two promising apprentice jockeys, who rode with fair success at Agua Caliente, will perform for new employers during the Tanforan meeting. Jockey V. Whisman, whose contract C. B. Irwin purchased early in the year, has been sold to W. E. Hall, while the Continued on second page. OPEN TANFORAN PARK Continued from first page. papers on W. Johns, which were formerly held by N. A. Dickey, have been transferred to G. OConnell. Johns has never ridden a winner, but had few good chances during the winter and may graduate during the coming meeting. An old favorite returns to the public gaze in the person of Eddie Taplin, one of the real veterans of the saddle. Taplin, who was "booting" them home before most of the present day riders saw the light of day, has been granted a license and will ride freelance. Eddie has had a varied career. After retiring from the saddle a few years back he was trainer of the extensive string owned by Alexander Pantages. He had decided to remain on the ground, but the lure of the galloping steeds drew him back to his favorite occupation and he will try his hand at whipping them home once again. Jockey Delmar Trivett, who received a bad fall during the closing days of the Agua Caliente session, has fully recovered and is expected to create a stir at Tanforan. He will have ample opportunity, as he will be astride the horses of the Northway Stable, which are numbered among the best at the course. All in all, it appears as if the coming meeting will do much to put thoroughbred racing on a firm basis in the golden state, and, should the coming meeting be the success which the management expects, it is thought that another meeting may be held in the fall previous to the opening of the long Agua Caliente winter meeting.
