FILLY DEFEATS STARS Current Accounts for Greenwood Purse at Louisville Martie Flynn Mike Hall and Toro ToroUnable Unable to Keep Pace With WithClark Clark Racer LOUISVILLE Ky May 15 Current the daughter orchatterton which A Baker cam ¬ paigns for R S Clark eastern owner scored a notable victory on the occasion of her first start in almost a year Meeting such mascu ¬ line stars as Martie Flynn Mike Hall Toro and two others of lesser note under virtually cqual weights she won the Greenwood Purse easily at Churchill Downs today The race over seveneighths a distance which gave the lightfooted winner an advantage over the others was the feature of another good pro ¬ gram decided over a good but spotted track trackCurrent Current displaying all the speed that marked the fine effort of her previous two campaigns cut out her own pace and dis ¬ posing of the younger All Upset after a half mile held the lead safe thereafter to win by almost three lengths from Martie Flynn FlynnThe The latter after being forced back when leaving the chute worked his way to within striking distance of the winner approaching the stretch but found her closing speed far too much and had to be content with out ¬ staying Mike Hall by slightly more than a length A considerable loss of ground ruined Mike Halls chances but added to the im pressiveness of his effort in which he led home Toro which ruled a pronounced fa ¬ vorite by two and onehalf lengths for the minor part of the purse Unable to keep pace with Mike Hall as the latter filed around him approaching the turn Toro trailed the placed trio throughout the closing threeeighths but closed fast fastCurrent Current ridden by Willie Garner ran the distance in 1 2G a good performance over the prevailing racing strip It was her first essay since last June and trainer Baker had her in fine trim for the return to competition competitionThe The attendance again was of large propor ¬ tions included numerous Derby visitors and presaged not only a great crowd Friday but a banner one for Derby Day as well Al ¬ though threatening weather greeted patrons an appreciable clearing of the skies devel ¬ oped late in the afternoon and further en ¬ hanced prospects for a great weekend at the historic old course courseSupreme Supreme Sweet was victorious over French Lass Broomshot and six other fillies and Continued on twentieth page FSLLY DEFEATS STARS Continued from first page mares in the race which opened the program She worked her way into the lead after five sixteenths and won easily thereafter while Lady Fingers which was expected to furnish the chief contention had little chance under a timid ride by Pichon Taken back before they had gone a quarter she was guided to the extreme outside and Pichon had her in the less firm part of the track from the three eighths post to the finish Broomshot which followed closest to the winner to the final eighth gave way to French Lass for second place during the subsequent racing racingCrowding Crowding marred the second race in which the Keeneland Studs In Haste emerged an easy winner over nine other maiden juvenile fillies and it cost Beauty Belle which was well backed whatever chance she had and almost resulted in a fall for Weideleen The latter came out of the race badly cut about her right fore and hind legs while Beauty Belle also received a minor cut The winner lucky to miss the interference worked her way to the front entering the stretch and drawing away won by five lengths from Surly at the end of the four and onehalf furlongs Third fell to Belen which gamely outfinished Spring Cleaning which tired after showing early speed speedMyth Myth under the colors of B O Hickman local owner proved an easy winner over Kentucky Ace Hercndeen and three others from among the better grade platers in the third race H Schutte brought the winner from behind with a rush after reaching the stretch and drawing away she won by three lengths from Kentucky Ace The latter after losing the lead to Chatter Black easily dis ¬ posed of the latter in the final drive and gamely outstayed Herenden for second place placeJockey Jockey Clarence McCrossen on several oc ¬ casions guilty of failing to prevent his mounts from forcing rivals to pursue a diagonal course in the stretch again resorted to such tactics while riding C Van Dusens Miss Cliilla in the fourth race and his ability to get away with the rough riding saved the day for the wejlbacked filly At the end of the four and onehalf furlongs she had only a nose margin over Reverberate the Greentree Stable starter which she forced out all during the final threesixteenths Near the end it appeared that McCrosscn in his attempts to apply the whip might have struck jockey L Jones on Reverberate Jones lodged a claim of foul but the stew ¬ ards after a brief consideration decided against a disqualification an action which occasioned no little surprise
