back to Belmont Park under damp weather conditions this afternoon but it was given a worthy greeting by the more than 10000 persons in attendance The feature of the inaugural program run over a muddy track was the thirtyseventh renewal of the Tobog ¬ gan Handicap and victory in the famous race over to the Widener chute fell to Balko the fiveyearold sprinter in the Sagamore Stable of Mrs Charles Amory AmoryDriven Driven out to the finish by Joa Bejshak the Omar Khayyam five3earold defeated Gifford A Cochrans crack twoyearold of last year Flying Heels by three lengths with Robert L Gerrys High Strung third another head back Fourth place fell to John R Macombers PetceWrack three lengths back of High Strung and five lengths in the van of Maya Then followed Lace Os mand Twink Capture Sarazen II and Eddie Ahearn AhearnBalko Balko led all the way over the six furlongs straightaway and set a fast pace doing so as he finished the distance in the remarkable time of 111 His victory his second in as many starts this season he previously hav ¬ ing scored easily at Pimlico was worth 8650 to his owner ownerThe The field was well bunched in the early stages after a good start with the cerise and white silks of Balko in a prominent place on the outside After the field had come within good view of the grandstand the Sagamore standard bearer was seen to have a length lead Nearest to him was High Strung and Flying Heels while Os mand equal favorite with the winner was unable to find his best stride in the going goingBalko Balko raced straight and true and until passing the furlong post was getting a hard fight from High Strung and Flying Heels but his superiority began to show itself in the last eighth and he gradually drew away until at the end he was well clear Fly ¬ ing Heels managed to wear down the Futur ¬ ity winner of 1928 with the courage that characterized his juvenile performances and got his head in front for second money in the final sixteenth The others of the field were unable to keep pace with the lead ¬ ers during the final quarter and were well spread out at the end endBKADLEYS BKADLEYS INTERNATIONAL INTERNATIONALE E R Bradleys Beelzebub finished gamely not to finish losing his rider at the seventh jump jumpThe The race was weirdly run as both Beelze ¬ bub and Laufjunge had poor rides Soon after the start Thorndike took the Bradley hope back to last place but the pace was so slow that Beelzebub began moving up after the second jump until he was in a contending position Laufjunge led for a short distance after the start and then E Wolke took him back to last place Beelze ¬ bub took the lead from Stalker at the lower turn and on the back stretch the German racer came from the rear with a rush as ¬ suming command on the far turn He opened up a good lead on Beelzebub on the last tiirn and seemed to have the race won in the final straightaway but Thorndike pun ¬ ished the Bradley jumper severely and he responded by slowly wearing down Lauf ¬ junge and passing him after taking the last jump jumpCanterbury Canterbury made a strong effort in the final threequarters but could not get up while Crumplers performance was an even one throughout throughoutThe The Elmont Purse a claiming race of one mile for the better grade of platers resulted in an easy victory for Marshall Fields Per ¬ kins ridden by McKechnie At the end Per ¬ kins had a big advantage over Montferrat while Storm a stablemate of the winner was a driving third for R L Gerry over Strong heart The winner assumed command at the start and at no stage of the race left the result in serious doubt Storm raced along after him for the greater part of the journey but in the final furlong gave way to Mont ¬ ferrat which in turn had worked his way up steadily However he could never get to the winner Storm came again after drop ¬ ping back to outlast Strongheart in the final strides Imperial Air floundered in the going and at no stage was a serious factor factorTIP TIP IMPRESSIVELY IMPRESSIVELYUp Up started under the colors of the Canyon Stables and was an easy winner of the third race of the day The race was over the Widener course and Up displayed his superiority at all stages Mrs Graham Fair Vanderbilts Chouette was the one to race to second place while George McMitchells recent claim Friar was third Mrs R T Wilsons Camper and 1C E Hitts Forte com ¬ pleted the field fieldThe The start was a good one but Up swerved slightly towards the inner rail He recovered quickly however and soon settled in his stride Drawing away he raced true there ¬ after and at the end had speed in reserve Chouette which was racing on the outside was under pressure for the greater part of the distance swerved slightly but finished gamely and was an easy second before Friar The latter showed a good effort in the race while Forte was done after going a half mile and Camper raced greenly Trainer George Odom saddled his second winner of the day when he sent Sun Edwin to the post in the fifth race called the Burgomaster Purse over one mile Sun Edwin had a big advantage over Enid from the Audley Farm which in turn led H B Swopes Lativich home The winner was ridden by McAtee and was a pronounced choice Beginning rapidly McAtee sent Sun Edwin away from his opponents and at no j stage of the race left the result in serious doubt Enid and Lativich raced along closely 1 lapped and it was not until the final turn was reached that the Audley Farm mare drew away She moved up steadily but did not menace the winner while Lativich flound ¬ ered about in the footing in the final quarter Rock Reef from the Foxcatcher Farms was an easy winner of the final race of the day Ridden by Erickson he dominated the race throughout Prince Peter was the one to finish second while Chickahominy barely outstayed Dame Rumor Tansy from the Rancccas Stable and ridden by Fator swerved badly a furlong from the finish and Fator was thrown The riderless horse then swerved in front of Ladder and impeded him
