Gallant Fox Wins Derb Tremendous Crowd of Nationally Known People Prominent in Political Professional Business and Social Life of the Country Join With Lord Derby in Witnessing Notable Race LOUISVILLE Ky May 17 Gallant Fox the favorite representing the Belair Stud won the fifty sixth Kentucky Derby today The Audley Farms Gallant Knight was second and Ned O owned by G W Foreman was third Gallant Fox led the field after going threequarters of a mile He was ridden by Earl Sande and it was the third Kentucky Derby victory for this famous rider Fifteen horses went the only scratch from the overnight entries having been Busy The track was good softened somewhat by a light rain about midday Fourth was Gone Away another east ¬ ern candidate which made it a total de ¬ feat for the western candidates except for the placing of Gallant Knight KnightGallant Gallant Foxs margin over Gallant Knight at the end of the mile and a quarter was two lengths By winning the Derby he equaled the feat of Sir Barton which in 1919 won both the Preakness Stakes and the Derby DerbyIt It was a magnificent triumph for the in ¬ vaders when the first third and fourth horses were sent on from the East and as a matter of fact Crack Brigade which raced fifth was also sent over from New York The race was run in a drizzling rainstorm but over a track that was good It was a truly run race and there was no doubt of the best horse having been winner He was piloted by Earl Sande who rode him to victory in both the Wood Memorial and the Preakness He finished out the mile and a quarter in 2 07 07The The Earl of Derby viewed the running from a specially constructed stand for the occasion and after the running he presented William Woodward with the 5000 Gold Cup with a few appropriate remarks The Eng ¬ lish sportsman made his presentation speech in a rainfall and he was loudly cheered by some 80000 that crowded into the course to witness the running runningyO yO DELAY AT TOST Little time was lost at the post and for the first time in its history the classic was started from a stall gate the Waite device being used The start was a good one and Sande had the winner away with the leaders but he had to rouse him sharply to hold his position In the meantime he was being outrun by Alcibiades the only filly in the race and both Buckeye Poet and Tannery were showing a fine burst of speed as the first quarter was run in 23 Crack Bri ¬ gade was also heading the son of Sir Galla had III as they raced by the stand for the first turn and Sande was in a rather nasty pocket but with racing room Gallant Fox was galloping strongly and as was the case in the running of the Preakness Sande eased him out of his trouble going to the back stretch turn and when straightened away for that run he had moved up until he was at the leaders leadersHe He was going along nicely in hand Al ¬ cibiades was still making pace and the half had been run in 47 but Sande had made no move with Gallant Fox and was skillfully keeping him put of possible trouble troubleAs As the filly showed signs of weakening Sande permitted Gallant Fox to go into com ¬ mand and from that time the result was not seriously in doubt doubtCHACK CHACK BIUGADE CHALLENGES CHALLENGESCrack Crack Brigade challenged on the turn out of the back stretch and there Gallant Knight was moving along on the outside that gave promise of him becoming a menace H was running over the others in a fashion to hearten his supporters but Gallant Fox was still in hand and Crack Brigade was hanging on with excellent courage After courageAfter the running of the third race there came a shower that drove some of the crowd from the infield to shelter while some sur ¬ rendered their points of vantage on the lawns Then there was appreciation of the immensity of the throng The tremendous crowd had been scattered out all over th3 grounds and there was scant room as they crowded into and under the stands There and many had to lake the rain as they dfd a year ago when Clyde Van Dusen splashed ids way to victory It was the fourth stic cessive year for a rainy Derby day but it itwas was not the same as the others The rain came later and it was not of the same variety It was a drizzle that could do mil linery no good but not enough to have any serious effect on the footing And that counted for much as far as Gal lant Fox was concerned for it is a pretty well established fact that the son of Sir Galla had IIL suffers a handicap in muddy going GALLANT FOX FOXWINS WINS DERBY Continued from first page On the other hand the Kentuckians were eager for rain and plenty of it by reason of Tannerys known liking for such going goingThe The drizzle continued through the running of the fourth race but the lure of the Derby ths next race brought the crowd from under shelter that is those of them that could find shelter and there was no little thing like rain going to interfere with their view of the run ¬ ning ningThe The roof of the stand on which various of the broadcasting companies had set up their machines was carrying a big load all day long but just before the running of the big classic an altogether unusual number of men became necessary for that broadcasting judging by those with some excuse or other that found their way to the roof roofTannery Tannery Gone Away High Foot Gallant Knight and Crack Brigade were each can ¬ tered slowly before being taken to the pad ¬ dock but the others were led into the en ¬ closure from the stable without going through tins limbering up canter and there really was no chance to breeze the horses safely before the running for the reason that imme ¬ diately after the running of the fourth race harrows were sent to the track for a final grooming of the strip before the big event The drizzles of the day had done little more than lay the dust and as post time ap ¬ proached it became certain that the running would be over a fast track trackIn In a driving finish Edward B McLeans Silverdale got up to defeat Hot Shot in the first race of the afternoon Uncle Matt raced to third place while Clog Dance after forc ¬ ing much of the pace set by Hot Shot tired in the final drive and was fourth at the end of the six and onehalf furlongs W Lennie rated the winner along under steady restraint and within close proximity of Hot Shot and Clog Dance to the stretch where he gamely went about the task of wearing down the leaders and winning by a neck neckEmpire Empire the highlyregarded brother of Re i public failed on the occasion of his first start when after being installed a pronounced favorite he was led to the end of fiveeighths in the second race by Deemster and Port codine Empire was first in the field of thirteen to reach the lead but First Vote another making his initial appearance was not long in wresting the coveted position from him and held sway to the final eighth where the winner and Portcodine raced past him and Empire caught him in the final strides for third place After entering the stretch First Vote and Empire raced wide with the winner and Portcodine passing them on the inside insideTHATCHERS THATCHERS SECOXD VICTOKY VICTOKYThe The second the winner got through next to the rail and wore him down in a bristling finish finishAn An easy victory for Gallaher Combs homebred son of Bunting and Whirl Back Log came with the running of the Crystal Spring Purse which preceded the Derby Favored by good luck he won by four lengths as Black Comet outstayed Bill Mor ¬ ris by a neck for second place Back of Bill Morris were Gun Fire Don Leon Anthro i and Josephine D The field while small represented one of the best from among f juveniles during the meeting meetingUnder Under a good ride by C McCrossen the victor slowly worked his way to the front t while pursuing a wide course around the J turn and showing fine speed when straight ¬ ened out in the stretch held sway thereafter All through the final quarter Black Comet b and Bill Morris fought it out stubbornly with i the latter on the outside while Don Leon the unlucky one of the field was eliminated when i he was forced against the inner rail just t before reaching the
