GALA DAY AT AURORA Attendance of 12000 Despite Chilly Weather Conditions Battle Ax Defeats Jack Haskell Haskellin in Feature Eace After AfterStirring Stirring Finish AURORA 111 May 17 Twelve thousand sport lovers braved the chilly weather that prevailed at Exposition Park today to watch the running of an eightrace program and while the majority were unsuccessful in selecting the winners those that followed the favorites were finally rewarded when Battle Ax racing coupled with Andromeda as the Davison entry scored in the Darby Handicap the days feature which came sixth on the program programBattle Battle Ax well ridden by jockey Mulrooney came from behind to get up in time to best Jack Haskell by half a length in a stirring finish Don Fernando was third and First Mission fourth while the winners stable companion Andromeda finished in last place placeA A field of eight competed and the speedy First Mission set out to make a runaway of the race The son of Chatterton sped around the first turn in front and displaying good speed opened up a good lead on the back stretch When half the distance had been traversed he was joined by Andromeda and the pair raced around the far turn on even terms As the stretch was reached Androm ¬ eda began to tire and Battle Ax and Jack Haskell were seen to move up in the stretch run First Mission shortening his stride was sandwiched in between Battle Ax on the out ¬ side and Jack Haskell on the inside and the latter pair were soon clear Jack Haskell obtained a short lead but Battle Ax had the most in reserve and got up in time Don Fernando performed creditably and finished fastest of all allFAYOKITES FAYOKITES FAKE POOKLY POOKLYFavorites Favorites fared poorly this afternoon not one scoring in the first five races The day was dark and cloudy but the track was fast fastAn An accident to the favorite Enthusiastic Edward somewhat marred the running of the first race This public favorite which was heavily backed stumbled at the start and unseated jockey Dupuy Bright Flash was the winner Ridden by jockey McLaughlin she worked her way up gradually and came fast in the stretch to catch Tetra Glass Sandy Hatch the pacemaker lasted to be third thirdGibbons Gibbons after scoring two victories at the meeting went down to defeat in the second race Negodale a firsttime starter here was the winner and ran a good race to take the purse He rushed to the front in the first quarter and racing Gibbons into sub ¬ mission lasted to hold the fastfinishing Beau Aspin safe Gibbons finished third but was tiring fast and would have been un ¬ placed in a few more strides Jockey L Frye rode the winner for his first success of the meeting meetingOVEIICOXFIDEXCE OVEIICOXFIDEXCE COSTLY COSTLYThe The public backed Bumpkin with confidence in the third race but due to an overcon ¬ fident ride on the part of jockey Boucher the gelding was beaten by a nose Bumpkin was permitted to drop far back in the early stages and though finishing fast could not get up in time to catch the outsider HuOn Time Tlie winner was always close up and under Morans guidance took a good lead in the stretch and scored by a nose llamona S finished third The race was over one mile and seventy yards and the winner paid 4202 4202Kama Kama furnished a big surprise when she won the fourth race and paid the long price of 5320 Prospect set the pace and looked the probable winner as the field came rac ¬ ing down the stretch but Nama gained stead ¬ ily and catching Prospect quilting near the finish won going away Prospect was sec ¬ ond and Golden Colna third Malcolm was Continued on twentyfourth page GALA DAY AT AURORA Continued from first page the public choice and was the fourth straight t favorite to go down to defeat He lacked 1 speed and was never dangerous dangerousJockey Jockey Willie Moran contract rider for the 3 C B Irwin stable scored his second victory f of the day when he brought home his em ¬ ployers Kit Carson winner of the fifth race Kit Carson was an outsider and after follow ¬ ing the pace set by Favorit II and Old 1 Kickapoo in the early stages came fast in i the stretch to win by a nose Favorit II was s second and Calgary Kay third The latter r was pojDrly ridden and was far out of it in n the early stages Kit Carson paid 1740 1740Jockey Jockey Moran rode his third winner and a C B Irwin made it a double when General 1 Jackson won the seventh race The winner r came from behind to catch Torch the pace ¬ maker in the stretch Big Chief after meet ¬ ing with much interference was a fast finish ¬ ing third Prickly Heat one of the starters s in the rage was claimed by Irwin for 2600 2600Charles I Charles Trimble one of the stewards at t Exposition Park will depart for Western n Canada soon after the close of this meeting Mr Trimble conducts meetings at Regina i Calgary Saskatoon Edmonton and Brandon n and expects that four carloads of horses will II ship to the Prairie Provinces from Aurora
